Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring an Engineering Associate. This role assists the lead engineer in updating and developing electrical schematics for our ALS RF system. The ideal candidate will be proficient in AutoCAD, have experience with electrical schematic workflows, a strong RF electrical theory background, and possess excellent communication skills along with meticulous attention to detail.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Legacy RF Drawing Conversion: Update current ALS RF AutoCAD Schematics to reflect the current design state from AutoEDMS, Engineering Document Management Systems to Windchill PLM software.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with RF engineers to gather information and ensure alignment on technical documentation requirements.
  • Editing AutoCAD Schematics: Review and edit technical documents to adhere to ALS drafting standards.
  • Hands-On field verification work (~10%).
  • Bill of Materials management and Inventory Management of procurement items.
  • Document Maintenance: Keep existing technical documentation up to date to reflect changes in product features or specifications.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct quality assurance checks on technical documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously assess and enhance documentation processes, tools, and templates to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

 

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

Engineering Associate Level 1:

  • May supervise exempt and non-exempt personnel for project coordination.
  • Support non-ALS-U projects at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as needed.

Engineering Associate Level 2:

  • Supervise exempt and non-exempt personnel on projects.
  • Support non-ALS-U projects at LBNL as needed.
  • Mentor entry-level engineering associates.

 

What is Required:

Engineering Associate Level 1:

  • Experience with accelerator and beamline electronic systems or similar industrial experience.
  • Understanding Analog and/or RF Circuits
  • Strong foundation in CAD design techniques; experience with AutoCAD or OrCAD.
  • Proven ability to manage technical projects from start to finish using project management principles.
  • Strong background in electronics design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with scientists and engineers.
  • Collaborative team player with engineers, technicians, and stakeholders.
  • Skilled in writing clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Project, Google Workspace, and Zoom.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledgeable in electrical safety principles and the National Electric Code (NFPA-70 & NFPA-70E).

In Addition, the Engineering Associate Level 2:

  • Experience with accelerator RF electronic systems, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Strong background in electronics circuit design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with accelerator and beamline electronic systems or similar industrial experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

Engineering Associate Level 1:

  • AA or Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related field with 4 years of experience; BS degree knowledge.
  • Experience with circuits, wiring, power distribution, and control systems.
  • Experience with accelerator RF electronic systems or similar industrial experience.
  • Experience with installation and operation of circuits, wiring, power distribution, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with low conductivity and cooled water monitoring systems, ultra-high vacuum control, and database management tools.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment, electronics enclosures, large magnets, high current/high voltage DC power supplies, and industrial control systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS).
  • Understanding of personnel safety, equipment interlocks, networking hardware, and protocols.
  • Ability to create, test prototypes, and read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical diagrams.
  • Project management experience including scheduling, budgeting, and resource coordination.

In Addition, the Engineering Associate Level 2:

  • AA degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related field, with 5 years of equivalent experience; knowledge equivalent to BS degree.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The expected salary range of this position at the N10.1 level is between $90,924.00 - $111,120.00 annually, which falls into the full salary range of $80,784.00 - $136,368.00 annually. The final salary depends upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • The expected salary range of this position at the N10.2 level is between $108,780.00 - $132,960.00 annually, which falls into the full salary range of $96,684.00 - $163,188.00 monthly. The final salary depends upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
