Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) Division has an opening for a Network Group Lead to join the team.

 

 

As the NERSC Network Group Manager, you will lead a team of network engineers in support of the NERSC mission to advance science by providing high-performance computing capability to the Department of Energy Office of Science. This requires the ability to access the center and transfer large amounts of data over high-speed networks throughout the center as well as to other labs. As a member of the NERSC leadership team, the Network Group Manager collaborates with other Managers internally and externally to provide a strategy for implementing and maintaining high speed network infrastructure for services provided to our customer base.

 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Supervise a team of engineers responsible for the network architecture and infrastructure of NERSC. 
  • Lead cross-organizational, long-term projects supporting important deliverables. 
  • Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. 
  • Responsible for network engineering, processes and execution at the Group level, providing leadership and guidance for technical network engineering staff. 
  • The Network Group Manager works with engineers to assign and prioritize work, identify and resolve obstacles and manage risk. 
  • Provide process guidance and support to the engineering team for procurements, including scope of work development, RFPs, RFIs, etc. when needed. 
  • Support the Department Head in budget development and management by forecasting procurements, and guiding engineers in executing procurements. Participate in technical vendor management, and Operations teams. May lead/participate in vendor operational reviews. 
  • Lead recruitment effort including interviewing and candidate selection for network engineering staff needs. 
  • Responsible for network project execution, including: 
    • Assigning engineers and managing engineering resources for projects.
    • Project execution and resource allocation.
  • Lead the evaluation, development and Implementation of network engineering technical and service designs and operations practices. Ensure alignment with architectural and operational strategies, ensure standard operational practices are well communicated and integrated into day-to-day activities. Conduct design reviews as appropriate. 
  • Coordinate with our wide area network provider, ESnet, to ensure high performance network capability is available to our customer base. 
  • Provide coaching and development for staff.

 

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field, and/ or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a lead/supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in leading technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, able to determine what is needed to fulfill high level outcomes and direct others.
  • Ability to work toward improving the base network infrastructure to help achieve NERSC’s long-term vision.
  • Able to work on multiple high-profile projects and respond to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and development of evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Ability to coordinate and lead all activities of the group and work on and resolve significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles
  • Demonstrated history of delivering on major security and network initiatives.
  • Experience delivering presentations to senior management and/or large stakeholders.
  • Experience with complex and currently applicable networking engineering/architecture, systems and services design, and implementation and support.
  • Knowledge and experience guiding network architecture, engineering and service strategy development. Ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders in developing infrastructure and service strategies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated history of working effectively with other teams on common goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, and mentoring technical staff
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing network engineering, processes and plans. Strong network implementation project management experience.
  • Excellent skills operating and maintaining a network in a production environment; with a focus on continuous improvement and metric-driven operations performance management.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • This full salary range of this position is between $13,718 to $23,150 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $15,433 to $18,863 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
