Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

The Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology (BCMT) designs and builds  key components of R&D magnet systems for science and engineering programs, providing vital underpinnings for many aspects of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science mission. We are an interdivisional organization managed jointly by the ATAP and Engineering Divisions of LBNL. With its unique integration of accelerator physicists, magnet researchers, magnet engineers, and fabrication teams, the center fosters rapid progress in the development, and reliable delivery, of new magnet technology.

In this role, you will work within the ATAP Superconducting Magnet Program (SMP), which is also an integral part of DOE’s national Magnet Development Program (USMDP). The primary responsibility will be on the development of superconducting magnets. The research will focus on contributing to the design and analysis of superconducting magnets to advance superconducting magnet technology for future accelerators.

What You Will Do:

  • Carry out thermal, magnetic, and mechanical numerical simulations to support the design of magnets.
  • Participate in the engineering design, fabrication, and test of advanced superconducting magnets.
  • Analyze experimental data with different measurement systems and correlate results with numerical computations.
  • Collaborate to develop new techniques, process and/or facility improvements related to magnet fabrication and conductor characterization.
  • Prepare scientific reports and communicate results with our collaborators.
  • Conduct original research independently and in collaborations.
  • Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences and publish in refereed journals.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Coordinate fabrication of superconducting magnets with the engineering and technical teams.
  • Follow-up on the procurement of the components.
  • Implement parallelized optimization studies on clusters and other HPC resources.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Engineering, or Physics.
  • Experience in two or more of the following areas:
    • Application of advanced modeling techniques to mechanical, magnetic, and thermal systems.
    • Application of Finite Element Analysis to superconducting magnet systems.
    • Experience with the design and fabrication of magnet systems.
  • Experience in analysis of experimental data.
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
  • Ability to work independently.Demonstrated publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in review of technical drawings.
  • Experience with beam dynamics and accelerator design concepts.
  • Experience implementing parallel code on HPC resources.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636-$7,371 and is expected to start at $6,477 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
