Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has an opening for an Advanced Analysis Manager to lead a team of Data Scientists and Engineers within their Data Science and Informatics Department!

In this exciting role, you will report to the Chief Informatics Officer (CIO) and lead your team to develop the next generation of software infrastructure to support data generation, analysis, and dissemination for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Joint Genome Institute. You will be responsible for managing engagements with external partners, including JGI’s computer infrastructure providers and collaborative development efforts with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) team.

The position will support the CIO in shaping and executing the overall strategy for data science and informatics. As a member of the JGI Management Team, you will actively contribute to strategic planning and provide leadership for key JGI initiatives. You will have the opportunity to develop the next generation of distributed software infrastructure for JGI, represent the JGI in relevant reviews, national and international activities, and within the broader DOE National Laboratory system.

The JGI’s mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOEs research mission to solve the world’s evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab’s main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour).

This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2025.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide effective line management for a team of approximately 10 data platform and software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and professional development. Ensure team members meet goals, deliver regular constructive and positive feedback, and maintain motivation and engagement.
  • Utilize Agile software management practices to manage team development activities.
  • Manage relationships with key external partners, including but not limited to:
    • The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), coordinating with a cross-functional team of approximately 8 staff across the Data Science Engagement Group, Infrastructure Systems Group, Storage Systems Group, and Computational Systems Group.
    • The DOE Knowledgebase (KBase), a critical partnership that provides the JGI’s user community with access to computational resources, high-quality data, and efficient tools for multi-omics analysis.
    • The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
  • Collaborate with other teams at JGI to ensure that applications run efficiently across JGI’s supercomputing infrastructure, storage systems, web gateways, and database resources.
  • Oversee JGI’s data management infrastructure, ensuring that data generated by JGI and its partners is securely managed and preserved.
  • In partnership with the CIO and JGI leadership, develop and execute a strategic plan for JGI’s infrastructure to support scientific and operational objectives.
  • Partner with the Systems Infrastructure Team on the procurement of hardware infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of JGI science and operations.
  • Collaborate with JGI scientists and researchers across Berkeley Lab, including the Computational Research Division, to evaluate and implement new methods and algorithms that enhance system capabilities and improve the user experience.
  • Continuously assess emerging technologies and provide recommendations on future technical directions to advance the organization’s mission.

What is Required:
