The Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory  (LBNL) is seeking a Logistics Operations Lead to join our high-impact team supporting the ALS-U project — a major scientific upgrade that will expand the facility's capabilities for groundbreaking research. As Logistics Operations Lead, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth execution of materials management, inventory tracking, and logistics operations essential to project success.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at a world-renowned research institution and directly contribute to a project with lasting scientific impact. You will collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, lead logistics efforts, and help optimize operations within a complex, fast-paced environment.

What You Will Do:

Lead Logistics Planning and Coordination

  • Lead logistics coordination efforts for specific ALS-U subsystems, proactively identifying and mitigating risks related to materials movement and scheduling conflicts.
  • Support scheduling efforts within the Logistics Group and ALS-U Subsystems, ensuring material movement aligns with project milestones.
  • Take a strategic role in planning logistics workflows, schedule integration, and subsystem coordination, ensuring seamless execution of project logistics.

Manage Materials and Inventory Operations

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of logistics schedules, inventory tracking processes, and pre-staging coordination efforts.
  • Work closely with Material Specialists and Subsystem Leads to ensure accurate data entries and inventory tracking in EZ Office Inventory and related platforms.
  • Develop and implement advanced inventory control methods to enhance tracking accuracy and minimize material waste.

Ensure Timely Delivery and Risk Mitigation

  • Serve as the primary logistics liaison for critical path materials and high-priority procurement items, ensuring that project teams receive required components without delays.
  • Provide logistics support for incoming inspections, tracking deliveries, and coordinating non-conforming material dispositions.

Optimize Logistics Processes and Systems

  • Analyze and refine logistics schedules, identifying areas for process improvements and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Assist in logistics process improvements, ensuring compliance with ALS-U and LBNL policies.
  • Develop and maintain higher-level reporting tools, dashboards, and process automation scripts to optimize logistics operations.

Drive Supplier Coordination and Cost Management

  • Oversee tracking, supplier coordination, and cost optimization strategies for ALS-U logistics.
  • Perform basic data entry, reporting, and analysis to support procurement tracking and materials coordination.

Collaborate and Train Across Teams

  • Interface with subsystems, QA, and engineering teams to align logistics efforts with technical requirements.
  • Train and mentor junior logistics personnel, ensuring best practices are consistently applied across ALS-U logistics functions.
  • Assist with storage logistics and space utilization planning to ensure efficient use of warehouse facilities

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain management, operations management, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in logistics, inventory management, or supply chain coordination within a complex technical or scientific project environment.
  • Proven experience leading logistics projects, optimizing inventory management systems, and improving scheduling efficiencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise managing high-priority material tracking, supplier coordination, and logistics cost controls.
  • Proficiency with inventory tracking databases, logistics software, and MRP (Material Requirements Planning) systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple logistics tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Leadership experience, including mentoring and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with vendor coordination processes and requisition tracking procedures.
  • Ability to analyze logistics data and generate actionable reports to support decision-making.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with engineers, scientists, and logistics personnel.
  • Basic proficiency with coding languages (e.g., SQL, Python, VBA, or scripting languages) to create queries and retrieve data across multiple systems.
  • Advanced skills in logistics reporting, process automation (SQL, Python, or scripting), and use of data visualization tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in logistics, supply chain management, operations management, or a related field.
  • Experience working within U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories or similar scientific research organizations.
  • Familiarity with DOE Order 413.3B and scientific material handling protocols.
  • Knowledge of ALS-U logistics operations and supply chain processes.
  • Strong ability to assess logistics workflows, identify bottlenecks, and implement process improvements to drive operational efficiency.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 5 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
