Join a dynamic, agile team within the Scientific Networking Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, focused on applied research, prototyping innovative network services, and developing large-scale testbeds for scientific applications.  This role leverages wide-ranging experience in network control, software development, and creative problem-solving to implement and demonstrate impactful research and new services.  You will explore the application of advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to optimize and innovate network solutions in both traditional optical and cutting-edge quantum communication environments. While prototyping and feasibility studies are central, responsibilities also include deploying state-of-the-art networking services to accelerate scientific discovery and presenting research to internal and external stakeholders.  The team fosters continuous learning, creative thinking, and skills development aligned with team objectives.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary team designing and implementing software for applied research, prototype services, and testbed projects.
  • Contribute to multiple projects and effectively collaborate with internal and external partners, including those from both operational and research backgrounds.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues requiring in-depth analysis of situations and data.
  • Bring state-of-art solutions from the research community to address important operational challenges at the Scientific Networking Division.
  • Develop and present demonstrations of novel ideas and research findings.
  • Present research findings at workshops and conferences.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members and student assistants.

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to networking.
  • Demonstrated technical depth and ability to understand and contribute to applied research ideas and cutting-edge projects with potentially undefined requirements.
  • Some experience initiating, planning, and executing small independent projects.
  • Experience developing with at least two of the following languages: Python, C, C++, Java, or Go.
  • Experience developing libraries and applications for Linux systems.
  • Experience with networking or distributed programming.
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP and networking protocols.
  • Proficiency in presenting research activities at workshops and conferences.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multi-institutional teams, including individuals with both operational and research backgrounds.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Ability to network and collaborate with key contacts outside their own area of expertise.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $129,948 to $219,276 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $146,184 to $178,668 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs, and remote work schedules may be considered.
