Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Health and Safety Division has an opening for an Occupational Health & Safety Specialist to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will be working as an industrial hygiene and construction safety professional under direction of the Construction and Maintenance Field Support Manager, senior field staff and the Lab’s Asbestos and Lead Program Managers. You will be providing asbestos and lead bulk and air sampling in support of construction and maintenance projects, including data entry into the Lab’s sampling data system for creating survey reports. This position will also provide general safety field support for construction and maintenance projects which may include the areas of industrial hygiene, construction health and safety, subcontractor health and safety, maintenance health and safety, silica, excavation safety, fall protection, ladder safety, etc. 

 

What You Will Do:

 

Support industrial hygiene and safety programs across the EHS Operations Support Team to help ensure construction and maintenance projects are performed safely by performing the following:

  • Provide support for all LBNL subcontractors/vendors and LBNL customers, including support for the PIM Division construction and their construction subcontractors.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene sampling and hazardous materials characterization for future and ongoing construction projects, as well as, provide associated report writing. 
  • Serve as the technical field construction health and safety professional providing occupational health and safety support and oversight for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Conduct hazard evaluations and industrial hygiene exposure assessments and provide recommendations to prevent exposures to safety hazards.  
  • Review construction and maintenance projects to ensure hazards are identified and appropriate controls are implemented using the SBN system.
  • Perform health and safety inspections and audits of field work to identify hazards and advises on, determines and develops recommendations for solutions, and follows up on corrective actions as appropriate. 
  • Implements programs and procedures to monitor contractor health and safety standards to ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, DOE, and Laboratory health and safety standards. 
  • Keep the Construction and Maintenance Field Support Manager up to date on the status of projects.
  • Take a lead role with maintaining Construction Safety Program documents, policies and procedures.
  • Provide a wide range of support to the Construction Safety Program in including subcontractor outreach, initiatives to improve subcontractor safety, safety talks at meetings, etc.

 

What is Required:

  • BA/BS and a minimum of 3 to 5 years of significant and relevant, construction safety and IH experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to interact with facilities management/staff, EHS management/staff, project managers/superintendents, and subcontractors. Essential skills include the proven ability to build a consensus that supports desired actions.
  • Demonstrated experience as a construction safety professional with excellent knowledge and understanding of OSHA, DOE, ANSI, and other related safety requirements/regulations.
  • Direct experience in applying OSHA, DOE, ANSI and other related safety requirements/regulations in a wide variety of construction work environments.
  • Experience in developing and delivering safety training.
  • Proficiency with standard business software, including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.
  • Certified Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification or working toward obtaining.
  • Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) or Site Surveillance Technician (SST) or working toward obtaining or minimum of having current AHERA accreditation training.
  • CDPH lead certification for oversight and sampling purposes or working toward obtaining.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional occupational health or safety professional certifications are preferred (i.e., CIH or CSP).

 

Notes:

  • This is a full time 3-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $98,400.00-$123,000.00, which fits within the full salary range of $98,400.00- $166,032.00 for the H52.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
