Truck Driver Lead
The Berkeley Lab is hiring a Truck Driver Lead. Under the Transportation Supervisor's guidance, the Lead Driver oversees the delivery team, trains drivers on SOPs and job expectations, manages transport scheduling for on- and off-site pickups and deliveries, and may occasionally assist with these tasks.
The Lead Driver manages end-of-day operations, ensuring vehicle maintenance, driver accountability, and efficient use of transportation vehicles. Key customers include Laboratory divisions, DOE facilities, UC Berkeley, and remote sites such as UCOP, Livermore, SLAC, and Sandia Lab. Equipment includes heavy-duty tractor-trailers, multi-axle vehicles, high-capacity forklifts, and various delivery trucks. A strong focus on safety is essential.
What You Will Do:
Administrative/Leadership (60%)
- Train, supervise, and provide feedback to drivers, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and SOPs.
- Conduct regular check-ins and sustainment training; report performance or conduct issues.
- Support operational planning and immediately report incidents or issues (e.g., accidents, complaints, hazards).
- Manage the transportation inbox and maintain positive client communication.
- Coordinate transportation work orders, schedules, and serve as Maximo backup.
- Oversee daily vehicle checks, PMCS, and vehicle inspections; ensure driver compliance.
- Assist in workplace injury/accident investigations and maintain updated route information.
- Provide support to other transport teams as needed; attend required training.
- Comply with DOT and Workplace Substance Abuse Program requirements.
Transport Operations (10%)
- Sort, stage, and deliver packages (including sensitive and refrigerated items).
- Perform medium/heavy hauling using specialized equipment; ensure safe loading and securement.
- Adjust operations based on road conditions to ensure safety.
Documentation & Control (10%)
- Scan and track materials using hand-held devices; obtain signatures for sensitive items.
- Ensure all required transport documentation is completed and accompanies materials.
- Handle hazardous materials in compliance with DOT 49CFR.
Vehicle Maintenance (10%)
- Oversee vehicle maintenance and inspections; report issues promptly.
- Coordinate with fleet management and ensure vehicle cleanliness and safety readiness.
- Maintain functional communication devices and a safe dock area.
- Complete online accident reports when required.
Miscellaneous (10%)
- May serve as acting Transportation Supervisor based on operational needs.
What is Required:
- Must possess a valid Class A, California Commercial Driver’s license with hazmat, airbrake, and tanker endorsements and current medical card.
- Proven experience operating medium vans, liftgate trucks, heavy-duty semi-trailers (3+ axles), and high-capacity forklifts.
- Deep knowledge of DOT regulations, safety protocols, cargo handling, and documentation.
- Skilled in vehicle inspections, tie-downs, weight distribution, and maneuvering (backing, coupling/uncoupling).
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Effective communicator with solid conflict resolution, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Experienced in multitasking within dynamic environments, with strong organizational and independent decision-making capabilities.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiar with LBNL delivery sites, safety standards (Lab and DOT), Property Management system, iBox Barcode System, and basic rigging.
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) eligible for overtime pay.
- The Truck Driver Lead position is expected to pay $41.23 - $50.39 per hour, which fits into the full hourly range of $ $36.65 - $61.85, for the job classification of 745.3.
