ALS-U Beamline Electonics Engineer
Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division is seeking a Beamline Electronics Engineer for the ALS-U upgrade project. The role involves designing, procuring, and implementing electrical systems for upgraded and new beamlines, including legacy instrumentation upgrades and cutting-edge system development. Responsibilities include cable and rack layout, power distribution, instrumentation integration, test planning, and oversight of contractors and trades.
The engineer will work with a multidisciplinary team to define scope, estimate costs and schedules, support technical planning, and resolve integration challenges between new technologies and existing infrastructure.
What You Will Do:
- Apply technical expertise and company policies to resolve a range of issues.
- Support project reporting and participate in technical reviews.
- Coordinate testing of new and upgraded systems to ensure compliance.
- Develop technical specifications and electrical requirements for procurement and design.
- Serve as subcontractor liaison to ensure quality and alignment with project goals.
- Draft procurement documents, support contracts, and verify invoice completion.
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians on system implementation.
- Contribute to the electrical safety program through inspections and assessments.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and recommend system improvements.
What is Required:
Beamline Electronics Engineer Level 2:
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, advanced degree with no experience, or equivalent.
- Experience designing, installing, and troubleshooting complex electrical systems in research or industrial settings.
- Familiar with low-voltage power, cabling, racks, and industrial control systems.
- Proficient in CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Creo) and cable routing software.
- Knowledge of electrical codes and standards (NEC, LOTO, NFPA 70E, EIA-748-C).
- Understanding of electronics, controls, and distribution systems for planning and compliance.
- Strong grasp of mechanical/electrical integration and engineering principles.
- Effective communicator and team collaborator across diverse technical groups.
- Experience in accelerator-related electrical systems (e.g., high power supplies, RF, signal processing, controls).
- Programming and database skills.
- Adaptable and eager to learn new technologies.
In Addition, for Beamline Electronics Engineer Level 3:
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.
Additional Qualifications:
- M.S. or higher degree with 5 years of relevant experience (8+ years for Level 3).
- Experience in synchrotron, accelerator, or similar research environments.
- Familiar with beamline control systems (e.g., EPICS).
- Knowledge of radiation safety and grounding in beamline/accelerator settings.
- PE license preferred or willingness to obtain.

- This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- Beamline Electronics Engineer Level 2: The expected salary for this position is $111,000.00 - $136,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $98,904.00 - $166,932.00 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
- Beamline Electronics Engineer Level 3: The expected salary for this position is $132,000.00 - $162,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $117,660.00 - $198,516.00 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
