Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Biologist Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division as part of the Plant Cell Wall Biology & Engineering group in the Feedstocks Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). Specifically, under the supervision of Aymerick Eudes, you will be involved in two sub-projects: (1) developing metabolic pathways to produce novel lignins and/or valuable co-products in model plants and crops (Arabidopsis, tobacco, sorghum) and (2) characterize sorghum lines engineered with the existing JBEI-Feedstocks’ technology portfolio. The primary role of the Postdoc will be to generate DNA constructs for plant transformation, select transgenic plants, characterize the engineered plant material at the metabolite level, and conduct biomass composition and deconstruction analyses.

What You Will Do:

  • Cell wall and metabolite analyses from Arabidopsis and sorghum transgenic lines
  • Generate DNA constructs for expression of metabolic pathways
  • Plant transformation (Arabidopsis) / molecular characterization / transient expression in tobacco
  • Saccharification assays of engineered biomass
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents
  • Collaborate with JBEI-Fuels and Bioproducts Division for biomass conversion
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Archive generated material (Plasmid / seeds/ biomass samples). Ensure that others could duplicate results

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Metabolomics, Biochemistry, or related areas
  • Expert knowledge in DNA manipulation / cloning
  • Significant experience in working with plant mutants and transformation including culturing, transformation, selection, and genotyping
  • Experience in synthetic biology, metabolite analysis, lignin analyses, and/or biomass deconstruction
  • Experience working with the guidance of a director or principal investigator and conducting experiments independently
  • Ability to conduct original work that meets the milestones of a larger project and scientific program
  • Maintain an electronic lab notebook, maintain appropriate records, and manage data
  • Provide detailed monthly reports that can be used as part of manuscript for peer reviewed journals
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with writing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals
  • Experience with using liquid and gas chromatography instrumentation (HPLC and GC-MS)

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) — Bldg. 978, 5885 Hollis St., 4th floor, Emeryville, CA.
