Building Information Modeling (BIM) Designer
The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Building Information Modeling (BIM) Designer to support the development of a unified Autodesk Revit BIM system. This role involves consolidating as-built models from both BIM and parametric design spaces into a shared system. The BIM Designer will apply engineering knowledge to design and coordinate experimental apparatus, systems, and facilities, analyze equipment, conduct tests, and select components based on specifications and reliability. This position supports the ALS accelerator system design and maintenance, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and other systems, and will create system drawings and schematics from existing drawings, 3D models, and field conditions.
What You Will Do:
- Apply technical expertise in mechanical engineering to develop and evaluate design concepts for solving technical problems.
- Maintain and update a consolidated BIM model in Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud for building systems.
- Collaborate with project teams to integrate all design and construction data, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
- Assist in the design of integrated facility systems (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) and support experimental equipment. Create and update system drawings and documentation using Revit, AutoCAD, and other tools, ensuring they reflect field conditions and modifications.
- Perform site visits to catalog existing conditions and update the BIM model accordingly.
- Collaborate with project teams on design specifications, evaluate alternative concepts, and meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.

- May lead the activities of nonexempt personnel.
Senior BIM Designer:
- May lead the activities of exempt and nonexempt personnel.
- May directly supervise several employees, or manage a laboratory or operational facility when requested.
What is Required:
BIM Designer:
- Bachelor’s level degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, with at least 2 years of technical experience preferred.
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD/AutoCAD MEP, 3D point clouds, producing 2D drawings, clash detection, and integrated building systems in BIM models.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and experience applying them to technical design and project implementation.
- Ability to interpret job requirements and field conditions into accurate BIM models and system drawings.
- Familiar with building systems, MEP systems, and ASME Y14.5 drafting standards.
- Skilled in modeling techniques, vacuum system design, optics, structural supports, and precision engineering. Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
In Addition to the Above, Senior BIM Designer:
- Bachelor’s level degree with 10+ years of experience or 12+ years equivalent experience.
- Prefer Bachelor’s level degree with 12+ years of experience, or 14+ years of equivalent experiences
- Experienced in mentoring and supervising/managing direct reports.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proficient in CAD and experienced with CREO Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire), including GD&T, multi-sheet assembly drawings, and detailed fabrication drawings.
- Experience in a national laboratory environment and familiarity with accelerator systems and BIM tools like Navisworks or BIM 360.
Salary:
BMI Designer:
This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $93,000.00 to $114,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $82,728.00 to $139,644.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Senior BMI Designer:
This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $111,000.00 to $136,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $99,000.00 to $167,100.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
