Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Communications & Outreach Specialist. The U.S Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) is a national user facility of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). It is the only national user facility focused on plant, fungal, and microbial genome sequencing, synthesis, metabolomics and analysis for bioenergy and environmental applications. The role of the JGI’s Communications & Outreach team is to develop content targeting a diversity of audiences – from DOE program managers, prospective users, and a science-avid public – so that they better understand and support the mission of the Institute.

Within the Communications & Outreach team, the specialist’s role would be to develop and disseminate content to spread word of the JGI’s mission, both internally and externally. External communications involve multimedia productions, and news releases, DOE science highlights, and progress reports, as well as preparing reports for the DOE, and writing/updating content for the website. Internal communications include monthly staff profiles and updating internal displays with news and events. Secondary responsibilities would include coordinating tours for users and other visitors, and curating content for the JGI’s social media accounts.

What You Will Do:

  • Support JGI Communications & Outreach initiatives.

  • Regularly interact with a wide range of internal JGI staff, Berkeley Lab staff, as well as representatives from other National Laboratories, and other user communities.

  • Research potential stories to promote JGI research initiatives and programs.

  • Develop short multimedia (audio and/or video) productions in support of JGI research initiatives and programs.

  • Draft science highlights for DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

  • Draft high-profile science news releases for public dissemination.

  • Generate content for internal communications (event coordination, staff profiles, etc.) for the intranet and e-newsletters (JGI, Biosciences Area, Berkeley Lab)

  • Enlist JGI ambassadors to assist in lab facility tours, demonstrations and hands-on activities for classroom and community outreach.

  • Provide photography and video support at JGI.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What is Required:

  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and experience preferably in journalism or equivalent education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing journalistic-style articles, press releases, web content and other related documents.

  • Proficiency in video production and still digital photography.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress.

  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of media sources to effectively communicate with different audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with a variety of scientific, administrative and technical staff and give public presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, apply analytical skills, problem solve, and exercise sound judgment in support of the larger team and organization.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduate experience in laboratory science or journalism.

  • Knowledge of scientific theories and concepts related to genomics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioenergy, elemental cycling and biogeochemistry preferred.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

  • This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension up to 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be performed at DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) — 2800 Mitchell Dr., Walnut Creek, CA.
