Control Account Manager
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking a Control Account Manager for the transformational ALS Upgrade (ALS-U) Project. This multi-year, high-impact scientific infrastructure project will enable breakthroughs in materials and energy research, and we need a CAM who thrives at the intersection of engineering, project management, and collaboration.
As a Control Account Manager, you will own the successful delivery of a defined scope of work within a major project. You’ll manage cost and schedule performance, ensure technical objectives are met, and serve as a key link between engineering execution and project controls. This position is ideal for a technically proficient leader with deep project management expertise and a passion for scientific progress.
You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and play a pivotal role in delivering critical components of a DOE-funded scientific facility.
What You Will Do:
- Schedule Management: Create and manage detailed schedules for work packages within your control account. Track progress against milestones, identify critical path risks, and implement timely corrective actions to maintain schedule integrity.
- Cost Management: Develop and oversee the control account budget. Monitor actual costs and earned value performance, analyze variances, and make adjustments or initiate change requests when necessary. Support forecasting and contribute to monthly cost reporting.
- Resource Coordination: In coordination with your system technical lead, allocate and adjust personnel and equipment resources to optimize task execution. Coordinate shared resources with other CAMs and System Leads, and communicate resource needs to the Technical Project Manager (TPM).
- Procurement & Vendor Oversight: Partner with the Procurement team to specify and acquire required materials, parts, and contractor services. Oversee vendor deliverables to ensure technical compliance and timely delivery. Proactively address vendor issues and escalate as needed.
- Risk & Change Management: Proactively identify risks and develop mitigation plans. Lead the preparation of change requests or variance reports when scope, cost, or schedule changes arise, ensuring alignment with formal project change control processes.
- Reporting & Communication: Provide regular updates on technical progress, cost, and schedule performance. Prepare earned value management (EVM) data, variance analyses, and corrective action plans. Maintain clear communication with the System Lead and TPM, ensuring transparency and accountability.
What is Required:
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in a relevant field.
- Significant experience (ideally 10+ years) managing large-scale, complex, or high-risk technical projects.
- Expertise in all aspects of project management, including scope definition, planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.
- Proficiency in cost control, earned value analysis, forecasting, and performance reporting.
- Experience using project management software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
- Strong coordination skills with demonstrated ability to manage resources across a matrixed environment.
- Familiarity with the Department of Energy (DOE) project management order DOE 413.3B.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage diverse technical and project stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications:
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
