Berkeley Lab's Information Technology Division is hiring a Desktop Systems Specialist. This customer-facing role requires strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships within the Lab community.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Image, configure, and install hardware (desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, tablets, smartphones).
  • Collaborate with customers to troubleshoot and resolve moderate issues with computers, software, operating systems, and peripherals.
  • Monitor and report on customer success and task progress.
  • Write, review, and update knowledge base articles and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrate effective cybersecurity practices.
  • Accurately record all work in ticketing and timecard systems.
  • Manage small projects, including software evaluations, infrastructure assessments, and deployments, involving planning, scheduling, and quality control.
  • Support daily IT operations, including desktop support refresh and repurposed workstation programs.
  • Participate in group meetings and technical discussions.

 

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Support daily IT operations, including desktop support refresh and repurposed workstation programs.
  • Participate in group meetings and technical discussions.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience with at least two years in a professional IT environment.
  • Proficient in managing and troubleshooting Windows, Mac OS, Chrome OS, iOS, and Android operating systems.
  • Experienced with workstation and mobile systems, printers, and peripherals.
  • Valid California Driver’s license.
  • Provides customer service and technical support.
  • Experienced in Windows, Mac, and Linux system administration.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills for conveying technical information.
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices.
  • Knowledgeable in troubleshooting remote access tools (VPN, SSH, VNC, RDP).
  • Familiar with TCP/IP networking protocols (wired and wireless) and standards like USB, SATA, RAID, and PCIe.
  • Experienced with system maintenance tools (disk management, BIOS, RAID).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Active Directory, including Group Policy Objects and account management.
  • Knowledgeable in MS Office, Google Apps, and other productivity suites.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Skilled in requirements analysis.
  • Experienced in scripting for automating administrative tasks.
  • Proficient with system configuration, deployment, and endpoint management tools (e.g., SCCM, BigFix, MDT, JAMF).
  • Background in software or web development.
  • Previous support experience in a research environment.
  • Knowledgeable in High-Performance Computing, virtualization, storage infrastructure, and data management.
  • One or more technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Microsoft MCSE, Dell/Apple technician, Cisco CCNA) or equivalent education and experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $38.69 - $47.28 hourly, which fits within the full range of $35.21 - $59.41 hourly. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group. 
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
