Electronics Engineering Technologist
The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is seeking an Electronics Engineering Technologist to provide advanced technical support for electronics systems at the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The role involves designing, fabricating, and installing complex electronics equipment, as well as developing prototype models for large-scale manufacturing. The technologist will also manage integrated control, instrumentation, and communication systems. This position requires the ability to work the ALS shift schedule, which consists of a rotating cycle: seven days on, four days off, and seven days on, three days off, across three shifts.
What You Will Do:
- Read and interpret schematics, parts lists, and manuals for assembly, calibration, and maintenance.
- Independently troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate complex electronics and electro-mechanical systems to component level, using technical expertise and creativity.
- Run system, board, and component-level diagnostics on complex systems, following limited procedures.
- Plan tests, select equipment, and analyze results to ensure compliance with technical specifications.
- Perform maintenance, repair, and calibration of complex systems using both standard and unique methods.
- Determine methods and procedures for new assignments.
- Operate hand, power, and machine tools, as well as test equipment.
- Assist in designing electronics equipment or systems, providing design details and solutions.
- Advise professional staff and contribute to the design of technical applications.
- Apply extensive knowledge of ALS high voltage, high current power supplies, and high power RF systems.
- Draft drawings to communicate modifications and designs.
What is Required:Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 2:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in the electronics field.
- Strong understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanics, scientific principles, and mathematics.
- Proficient with complex test equipment, diagnostic procedures, and hand/power tools.
- Skilled in interpreting complex schematics and technical manuals for assembly, calibration, and maintenance.
- Experience with operating electronics test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, function/pulse generators).
- Proven ability in troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex electronics.
- Capable of exercising independent judgment to complete tasks.
- Familiar with equipment design procedures and techniques.
- Proficient in PC applications (spreadsheets, databases, word processors).
- Adequate color vision to discern wiring/component color codes and safety indicators.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).
In Addition, Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 3:
- 4-6 years of experience in electronics test, maintenance, and development.Advanced knowledge of equipment design procedures and techniques.
In Addition, Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 4:
- Minimum 6+ years of related experience
Desired Qualifications:
- AA Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent military/industrial training preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of ALS Radiation Protective Interlock Systems and ability to execute procedures and repairs for radiation protection.
- Skilled in computer-aided electronics drafting and design documentation.
- Broad knowledge of high voltage, high current power supplies, and RF systems.
- General electronics drafting and design skills.
- Familiar with NFPA 70E electrical safety work practices.
Salary:
Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 2:The hourly range for this position is $34.36 - $49.83. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 3:The hourly range for this position is $41.77 - $60.55. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 4:The hourly range for this position is $48.02 - $69.63. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
