Berkeley Lab is hiring an Electronics Engineering Technologist to support advanced electronic systems, including the Advanced Light Source. Responsibilities include testing, evaluating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex electronic and electro-mechanical equipment using technical skills, scientific principles, and mathematics. This role is a “hands-on” engineering position.  

 

What You Will Do:

  • Interpret schematics, diagrams, parts lists, manuals, and assembly instructions.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate complex electronic and electro-mechanical systems to the component level, applying technical expertise and judgment.
  • Perform diagnostics at system, board, and component levels; plan tests, select equipment, and analyze results for compliance with specifications.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and calibration using both standard and specialized methods to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, machine tools, test equipment, and complex electronic systems.
  • Assist in designing electronic systems and recommend modifications to existing designs.
  • Create drawings to communicate design changes and modifications.

 

What is Required:

Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 2:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the electronics field.
  • Strong knowledge of electronics theory, electro-mechanical systems, scientific principles, and mathematics.
  • Proficient with complex test equipment (Oscilloscopes, power meters, DMM, TDR), diagnostic procedures, and standard hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in interpreting complex schematics and technical manuals.
  • Experienced in troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex electronics.
  • Able to work independently and apply sound judgment.
  • Familiar with equipment design methods and techniques.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing.
  • Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).

In Addition, Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 3:

  • Minimum 4-6 years of experience in the electronics field.
  • Power Electronics

In Addition, Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 4:

  • Minimum 6+ years of experience in the electronics field.
  • Power Electronics
  • Advanced knowledge of test equipment, RF (microwave) systems, high-voltage and high-current power sources, and PLCs.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, related military training, trade school and or FCC General Radio Operators License, Certified Electronics Technician, Society of Broadcast Engineering - Certified Broadcast Radio or TV Engineer licenses or certifications. 
  • Computer-Aided electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.
  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, word processors and graphics

  • IT/LAN

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The hourly range for the Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 2 position is $34.36 - $49.83. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • The hourly range for the Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 3 position is $41.77 - $60.55. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • The hourly range for the Electronics Engineering Technologist Level 4 position is $48.02 - $69.63. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
