Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the fastest science network in the world, is seeking a hands-on Software Development Manager with demonstrated leadership skills to lead and manage the Software Engineering Group.

The Software Development Manager will serve as a key member of ESnet’s Leadership Team, overseeing full life-cycle software development that makes ESnet more efficient, and supports scientific collaborations around the world. This includes leading an exceptional group of roughly 15 world-class software engineers responsible for building the next generation high-speed science network for cutting edge scientific advancements as well as developing and maintaining technical and business interfaces with the leaders of ESnet’s internal groups.  Requires demonstrated expertise leading the design and implementation of software development projects and the ability to work productively and collaboratively with technical and leadership members representing national and international research and education networks.

The Software Development Manager will:

  • Lead the vision, strategy, design and implementation of an effective software and information architecture for ESnet.

  • Ensure the delivery of robust, secure, and innovative software tools and services to be used by ESnet internally and by ESnet’s scientific user communities.

  • Develop priorities for the Software Engineering Group, in coordination with ESnet’s strategic objectives and tactical plans including includes scoping, prioritizing, and managing technical projects.

  • Develop and implement design and software development processes, guidelines and standards that facilitate robust, scalable, cost-effective and innovative software tools and services.

  • Provide leadership and line management supervision for the Software Engineering Group.

  • Participate in ESnet outreach activities through written articles, presentations, and direct contacts with staff in peer and customer organizations.

  • Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity, fosters creativity and innovation, and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum five years experience in a managerial/leadership role within a software development organization. This includes experience providing supervision, guidance, and mentoring software engineers.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience designing, developing, and testing quality software – preferably using Python, Javascript, or Java in a UNIX/Linux environment.

  • Demonstrated experience with Agile software engineering practices including testing, documentation, source code management (ideally Git and Github) and release procedures.

  • Demonstrated expertise leading and shepherding the design and implementation of medium to large software development projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to run a moderate-sized, team-oriented organization and attract, retain and develop a talented and diverse staff.

  • Commitment to outstanding customer service.

  • Experience in project management, budget planning and execution, and resource allocation.

  • Very strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to foster positive work relationships and to resolve technical and interpersonal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer network technologies and terminology.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related field or equivalent additional experience.

  • Familiarity with DOE Office of Science research programs, and/or Research and Education networking communities in the US or abroad.

  • This is a full-time career appointment.

  • Level will be determined based on demonstrated Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Work Schedule: Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
