Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a EUV Lithography Research Scientist, (evening shift) to join the team.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Scientific and technical oversight of all infrastructure: EUVL exposure systems, synchrotron beamlines, semiconductor processing equipment, ellipsometers, scanning electron microscopes, software, servers, web/database systems, equipment protection systems, etc.  You are expected to be an expert at operating and troubleshooting these systems and keeping them functional during your shift.
  • Provide independent, sound guidance in real-time (scientific, technical, and strategic) to staff and customers during the shift to keep all systems functional and maximize value to customers.
  • Pilot our Hitachi S4800 analytical Scanning Electron Microscope with expert level skills to inspect patterned wafers. 
  • Provide excellent customer service to our world-wide user base before shifts and in real-time during shifts.
  • Supervise two engineers that operate the lithography system and wafer processing equipment during your shift
  • Ensure that experimental equipment maintains its world leading status
  • Maintain, improve, develop high level controls software for improved performance. Control software is written in MATLAB and you are expected to have expert level capabilities in MATLAB and programming in general.
  • Develop new hardware, diagnostics, software, capabilities, methods, or procedures to improve experimental systems and increase value to customers
  • Installation, commissioning, qualification, and debugging of new systems or subsystems
  • Reticle design and collaboration. Interface with manufacturers, communication of process goals, metrology points, etc.
  • Preparation of technical instructions and operational documents for new or altered experimental systems


What is Required:

  • Ph.D. preferred in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field preferred with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience with increasing responsibility in program administration and planning, or overall equivalent
  • EUV lithography publication record and conference presentation record
  • Five years experience in the commissioning, operation, alignment, and troubleshooting of EUV lithography systems or comparable synchrotron beamlines to keep them continuously functional.
  • Five years experience leading critical business operations including managing all personnel; developing / acquiring / maintaining supporting infrastructure; developing and refining procedures and processes, developing and maintaining a healthy culture, recruiting, interviewing, hiring and preserving talent, scheduling, adapting as needed to meet evolving business needs.  
  • Expert level knowledge of EUV lithography and EUV lithography systems
  • Optical design and modeling of illumination systems, imaging systems, or coherence control systems in ZEMAX.
  • MATLAB programming skills, full-stack web programming skills (PHP, MySQL, Javascript) and proficient with modern JS frameworks, e.g., React, Angular
  • Inspecting lithographic patterned wafers in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and identifying best focus and E-size for a particular target feature; identifying anomalous printing behavior or issues with the litho system, e.g., speckle, aberrations, drift, vibration, defocus, multiple exposures, incorrect dosing, field uniformity, partial coherence; and identifying resist failure mechanisms, and providing guidance how to achieve better performance
  • Experience operating semiconductor processing equipment, e.g., spin coaters, developers, bake plates, ellipsometers. 
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability in running a complex customer-centric user program
  • Ability to work as part of a team to determine program requirements, estimate budget requirements, develop proposals, and recommend strategic objectives
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication skills including scientific and technical communication skills

  • This is a (full-time/part-time) career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This is a permanent night shift position (16:00 - 24:00) and the successful candidate should desire long-term employment during the night shift.
