Fire Inspector
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Security and Emergency Service Division has an opening for a Fire Inspector to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide fire/life safety services to all employees, guests, and users at the main site and at off-site leased LBNL locations. The Fire Prevention Inspector applies standard fire protection theories and principles to support the development and implementation of fire prevention programs and procedures to minimize personnel injury and/or property damage due to fire and other hazards. Significant technical expertise and knowledge of relevant functional specialty principles and practices are acquired. Provides resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.

Program Implementation and Maintenance
The Fire Inspector will be evaluated for standard or broad knowledge in the following areas, concepts and strategies, and may contribute to the development of new theories/methods:
Fire Prevention Code Enforcement
The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the following activities under the supervision of the Fire Marshal:
- Building Inspections: Supports coordinated fire and life safety inspections of all LBNL buildings (on-site and off-site), ensuring compliance with DOE orders and applicable codes. Documents deficiencies and ensures corrective actions are taken. Performs basic code compliance reviews under the Fire Marshal’s or Senior Fire Inspector’s direction.
- Hot Work Program: Participates in the hot work permit program, issuing permits and conducting field inspections to prevent fire hazards. Regularly reviews routine hot work activities for compliance.
- Fire Extinguisher Program: Ensures fire extinguishers are inspected, tested, maintained, and properly placed per code. Tracks inspection schedules, maintains records, and ensures timely resolution of deficiencies.
- Inspection, Testing & Maintenance (ITM): Assists in overseeing ITM of fire alarms and suppression systems. Reviews vendor reports, identifies code violations, and coordinates with Facilities and vendors to correct issues and verify compliance.
Building Construction and Fire Protection Systems
The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the following activities under the supervision of the Fire Marshal:
- Plan Reviews: Assists Fire Protection Engineers in reviewing building and fire protection design documents for new or modified facilities to ensure safety and code compliance.
- Construction Inspections: Supports senior staff in verifying construction aligns with approved plans.
- New Construction Commissioning: Aids in commissioning to ensure compliance with DOE orders and fire/building codes. Reviews fire and life safety systems, documents test results, and notes deficiencies or occupancy restrictions.
Program Administration
- Prepares reports and presentations, leads meetings, and communicates effectively across all levels of the Lab, DOE, UCOP, and external agencies.
- Collaborates with internal teams, including EH&S and Facilities, to implement the Fire Protection Program.
- Supports cross-functional efforts to meet operational goals and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, performance measures, and corrective action closure.
Emergency Services
- Emergency Response Organization: Offers fire and life safety expertise for planning, policy, training, exercises, and program development within the Emergency Management Program.
- Emergency Operations Center (EOC): Serves as an active member during EOC planning, training, exercises, and activations.
- Pre-Plan Updating: Maintains and updates building pre-plans, including response routes, egress plans, and fire protection equipment locations; documents all revisions.
What is Required:
- Knowledge equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant programs (fire inspection, fire prevention education, code enforcement) and extensive related professional technical experience. Relevant technical certification preferred.
- Basic knowledge in the areas of: fire protection program planning and management; fire alarm and detection systems; building design review for fire and life safety systems; inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures for fire alarm and water-based suppression systems; hot work and other operational permits; fire prevention training; and fire response protocols and procedures.
- Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to achieve and maintain specialized working knowledge of UC, LBNL, BSO, DOE, and policies, procedures, and requirements as related to fire protection program planning and management.
- The work is approximately 30-40% sedentary and is accomplished while the employee is comfortably seated at a desk or table. Other required physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, working on ladders or elevated surfaces, lifting up to 20 pounds, crawling and similar activities are required in the conduct of building inspections, verification activities, and in response to field events and emergencies.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience performing basic plan reviews of Building and Fire Protection Systems including a general knowledge of applicable California Title 19 and 24 Codes and Regulations, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, and NFPA 101.
- Familiarity with NFPA 45, DOE Order 420.1C, and DOE Standard 1066.
Notes:
- This is a full time, 6 month, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- The Fire Inspector Level 1 position is expected to pay $93K - $103K annually, which fits into the full salary range of $ $82,728 - $139,644, for the job classification of N70.1 (Level 1)
