Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Information Technology (IT) Division has an opening for a Graphic Designer II to join the team.

 

In this role, you will conceptualize and create graphics and illustrations for published, printed or electronic media. Responsible for presenting information that is accessible and aesthetic. Maintain professional graphics and identify standards for the Lab. Consult with clients, editors and other staff to evaluate project needs to maintain a high-quality product. Monitor production of a project from conception to completion to assure quality control and customer expectations.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Under general supervision, design and produce moderately complex publications, printed materials, presentations and websites for a broad range of clients. This includes annual reports, proposals, brochures, magazines, newsletters, displays, templates, digital publications, posters, web pages and websites. Website design responsibilities for this position will include designing the user interface and user experience of external-facing websites using the Berkeley Lab design system, as well as designing internal employee sites.
  • Ensure the correct use of LBNL’s styles, logos, and fonts where applicable.
  • Present creative concepts and work to clients in a professional manner.
  • Participate in team meetings with updates on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate design and layout selections of photos, paper stocks, and other materials for execution of projects.
  • Prepare 4-color electronic files for the printer using the Adobe Creative Suite and other software programs as necessary, and screen-ready files for digital applications.
  • Work closely with the Printing Coordinator in preparing documents for printing.
  • Write clear and concise printing specifications and evaluate a variety of printers’ proofs.
  • Create simple scientific and editorial illustrations for academic journals and other publications.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, and 2 years of experience with current software and other tools used by graphic artists, illustrators, and designers; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Intermediate skills, knowledge, and abilities in graphic design principles, including branding, typography, technical illustration, color theory, digital file color management, and industry standards of printing, including offset process and spot colors.
  • Ability to appropriately estimate time necessary to produce work, and be able to work within budgeted hours.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously from concept to completion
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), Microsoft Office, and the Google suite of products.
  • Knowledge of digital tools and production technologies, basic knowledge of HTML/CSS, wireframes, and prototyping. Wordpress experience is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of personnel and other contacts, including scientists and administrators.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The hiring hourly range for this position is $33.85-$49.27.  Salary for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs, and remote work schedules may be considered.
