Berkeley Lab is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Technical Associate to provide versatile technical support in areas such as experimental apparatus design, facility management, and safety programs. The role involves collaborating with engineering and scientific staff, contributing to projects, and developing new methods and techniques. Responsibilities include solving complex problems, reviewing technical documentation for compliance with ASME Y14.5 and LBNL standards, and serving as a subject matter expert in manufacturability, dimensioning, and technical drawing practices.

What You Will Do:

  • Train, mentor, and oversee non-exempt staff for the accelerator vacuum and Injection & Extraction subsystems; provide technical support in other areas as needed.
  • Plan and schedule work under general oversight, aligning with project priorities.
  • Apply hands-on mechanical skills and broad technical knowledge in science and engineering, including fabrication, machining, assembly, testing, vacuum systems, cryogenics, and accelerator technologies.
  • Solve complex technical problems using Lab policies, procedures, and sound judgment within established practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex issues; determine actions based on data analysis and defined procedures.
  • Work independently with limited direction; develop and implement solutions, with performance evaluated upon completion.
  • Participate in meetings to share designs and schedules, provide design input, and recommend modifications.
  • Support and consult on manufacturability and technical drawing standards; serve as Subject Matter Expert for LBNL projects.
  • Develop and maintain policies, guidelines, and instructional materials related to technical drawing and manufacturability.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • May oversee the work of others.
  • Use computers and CAD/CAM software to document parts, components, and specifications.
  • Conduct complex tests and measurements to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Record assignment results, including procedures, tests, standards, and necessary modifications; perform required calculations and measurements.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Technology, Engineering, or related field, with 4+ years of relevant technical experience.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical system design, engineering principles, manufacturing practices, and fabrication/assembly coordination.
  • Proficient in ASME Y14.5, CAD standards for COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) libraries, and PLM systems (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter).
  • Skilled in applying standard engineering concepts to professional-level work.
  • Proven ability to lead, train, and collaborate with technical staff, designers, engineers, and scientists.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a crane and forklift.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical certification with general knowledge in a related scientific or technical field.
  • Background in mechanical fabrication.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The expected salary for this position is $93,000.00 - $114,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $82,728.00 - $139,644.00 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
