The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Metrology Technician. This role involves providing technical support in Coordinate Metrology with limited supervision, contributing to various Lab projects. Responsibilities include measurement support, using CAD and metrology tools to meet Lab objectives, and applying knowledge to complete diverse tasks.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Perform mechanical inspection and alignment of precision assemblies for in-house and vendor components.
  • Assist in setting up and operating complex metrology equipment, including CMMs and portable measuring systems.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings for proper CMM measurement setup, utilizing Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing standards.
  • Communicate measurement results effectively through reports and upload them to the product lifecycle management system (Windchill).
  • Plan work methods and select components, tooling, and materials with general guidance to achieve desired results.
  • Serve as mechanical metrology support in the Engineering Division with limited supervision.
  • Collaborate with managers, machinists, and engineers to ensure accuracy and reliability of measured data.
  • Contribute to issue resolution and make recommendations.

 

What is Required:

  • Requires 2-4 years of experience in metrology, quality control, or a related field.
  • Proficient in basic measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators) with optimal tool selection.
  • Experience with CMMs and software like PC-DMIS, GEOPAK, CMM Manager, or Calypso.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M or ISO 1101).
  • Familiarity with CAD systems (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor) for 3D model import/export.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management software (e.g., Windchill, SAP, Siemens Opcenter Quality).
  • Technical knowledge of engineering and manufacturing principles.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in MS Excel, Word, CAD systems, and Google Apps.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent industrial/military training.
  • Experience operating an overhead crane.
  • Familiarity with Zeiss Calypso software and Creo Parametric CAD software.
  • Experience with PTC Windchill product lifecycle management software.
  • Technical or professional certification in ASME Y14.5M GD&T.
  • Knowledge of B89.4.1 and/or ISO 10360-2 CMM performance assessment standards.
  • ASQ (or equivalent) quality certifications (CQI, CQT, CQE).
  • Experience with magnetic stretched wire or rotating coil systems for magnetic field qualification.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The hourly range for this position is $33.42 - $48.47. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
