Berkeley Lab’s Information Technology (IT) Division has an opening for an Network DevOps Engineer to join their dynamic team!  


In this role, you will work with the campus network group to build, maintain, and operate software to support high-speed wired and wireless networking to over 20,000 endpoints supporting the scientific and operational staff of the Lab.  


This position will be filled at a level 2, 3, or 4 dependent on experience.  This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.


What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for the development, testing, packaging, releasing, configuring, and monitoring critical in-house applications, including:

    • A python / Django web application that manages the work flow and automates fulfillment for Domain Name System (DNS) record and firewall rule requests for end users at LBL.

    • An application daemon written in C that acts as the interface for LBL’s cyber security group to implement and remove a high volume of block or other protection actions by implementing changes at various points in the LBL network.

  • Develop, maintain, test, deploy, monitor, and support in-house applications supporting the LBL campus network and LBL cyber security automation.

  • Partner with senior network engineers, supervisor, and network security team to gather requirements, establish API’s, and document test processes for applications.

  • Troubleshoot problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.


What Is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience with application and support development or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with a UNIX command line environment and TCP/IP networking.

  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python, C, C++, Perl, or bash scripts.

  • An understanding of software development, testing, and deployment theories and frameworks.

  • Critical thinking, troubleshooting, and communications skills.

  • Ability to work relatively independently under supervision.

  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.


What We Prefer:

  • Experience with managing DNS.

  • Experience with Linux/BSD configuration management and systems administration.

  • Experience with enterprise network configuration and/or support.

  • Experience with cloud-based IaaS, PaaS, and/or SaaS environments.

  • Experience using and troubleshooting DNSSEC.

  • Experience configuring, managing, and using network management software packages (open source and/or commercial).

  • Experience with the installation, operation, and testing of network infrastructure components, including switches and firewalls.

  • Experience in the Research and Education or Higher Education sectors.

  • Knowledge of configuration management systems such as Puppet and Ansible.

  • Knowledge of FreeBSD system administration and port management.

  • Knowledge of Linux system administration and package management.

  • Advanced knowledge of Python and Django.

  • Advanced knowledge of C programming.

  • Knowledge of SNMP and MIB structures.

  • Knowledge of Juniper, Cisco, Arista, and Aruba configuration and monitoring.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
