Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the fastest science network in the world, is seeking an experienced Network Engineering Manager who combines extensive technical and operational skills with superior analytical, project management, process development, communications, and leadership experience.

As a Network Engineering Manager for ESnet, you will serve as one of two networking managers providing leadership for network engineering and operations in support of ESnet’s current network and provide architecture and engineering for the innovative next-generation network design and build (ESnet6). Working closely with ESnet senior management and key stakeholders on formulating network, services and operational strategies, you will be responsible for leading the network engineering, detailed design, deployment, and escalation level operational services supporting ESnet mission and scientific collaborations around the world, Requires extensive technical skills with superior analytical, process development, communications, and leadership experience as well as comprehensive understanding of technologies and disciplines, with a focus on wide-area networking and demonstrated ability to manage projects, processes, and people. Outstanding communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work productively and collaboratively with networking technical and leadership members representing national and international research and education networks, technical experts, scientific customers, senior Berkeley Lab and Department of Energy management.

The Network Engineering Manager will:


  • Use IT service management, technology design and project management best practices, plan, lead, and direct the design, development, implementation, and operation of ESnet’s networking systems and services.

  • Provide effective line management for a team of Computer Systems Engineers specializing in network engineering. Demonstrate experience with hiring excellent staff, and ability to manage towards organization goals, provide feedback and mentor towards continuous improvement. Provide appropriate and relevant career growth, development and training opportunities

  • Develop projects and initiatives to deliver on strategic goals. Establish priorities, evaluate and recommend technology, systems, and services to ensure key goals are met.

  • In partnership with management, stakeholders, and peers (including ESnet customers and researchers), create and communicate a vision and strategy for the group. Use the strategy and vision to lead the development and implementation of technology, systems and services.

  • Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity, fosters creativity and innovation and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

  • Become a member of the ESnet Leadership Team, participate in exploring and setting overall strategy and direction for ESnet. Interface with leaders and senior staff within ESnet, including Science Engagement, CTO Office, Software Infrastructure and Systems groups.

  • Develop and maintain collaborative environment with other Networking Group Lead(s). Collectively develop and implement processes to distribute and manage activities across the entire team.

  • Develop and implement design and operational processes, guidelines and standards that facilitate robust, scalable, cost-effective and innovative services

  • Develop a comprehensive ongoing assessment of ESnet networks to facilitate continuous improvement. This includes enhancing existing services as well as developing strategies for introducing new networking services and monitoring and management tools.

  • Manage personnel problems, conflict resolution, and labor relations issues effectively and ensure their timely resolution in accordance with Laboratory policy.

  • Manage resources to meet commitments

  • Prepare and manage technology, maintenance and effort budgets, Collaborate with ESnet Business Office to manage spending plans. Prepare annual budgets aligned with ESnet’s financial objectives, and networking technology and services strategy.

  • Participate in ESnet outreach activities through written articles, presentations, and direct contacts with staff in peer and customer organizations.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, and progressively complex and currently applicable networking engineering and operations experience, plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory/management role

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team-oriented organization and attract, retain and develop a talented and diverse staff. Ability to foster positive work relationship and resolve technical and personal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.

  • Experience managing networking technologies relevant to current and future ESnet services, including multi-domain networking, virtual circuit services, IPv6, wide area network protocols and software defined networking.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working at a high level of architecture analysis, detailed network design, network services development, and operational practices in support of a continuous production high-performance network.

  • Extensive experience in project management and execution, including project budget and resource allocation. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage IT/Network projects to successful completion. Experience leading a project team or system leads in the context of technical architectures. Demonstrated ability to establish project schedules and plan, implement and monitor project plans and budgets to meet both normal operational and special projects goals.

  • Experience in IT service management principles and process design and optimization.

  • Proven ability to negotiate with vendors and manage vendor relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions consistent with organizational goals, policies and procedures. Sound judgment and ability to take decisive action without all desired information. Strategic planning and implementation skills. Ability to independently formulate, organize, document, and present ideas in an effective manner. Develop proposals and clearly articulate cost/benefit trade-offs to various audiences.

  • Excellent writing, verbal, presentation, customer service, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Must be team oriented and able to interface at multiple levels with users and clients

  • Ability to work occasional off-hours and weekends, including responding to off-hour production system outages.


Additional Desired Qualifications:


  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Network related field, or equivalent demonstrate experience

  • This is a full-time career appointment.

  • The position will be hired at a level depending on demonstrated Skills, Knowledge and Abilities.

  • Work Schedule: Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
