Physicist Research Scientist (Career-Track)

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division has an opening for a Physicist Research Scientist (Career-Track) to join the team.

In this role, you will perform work within the Fusion Sciences and Ion Beam Technology (FSIBT) Program in the Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a key member of a team of physicists. engineers, technicians, and students developing ion beam driven research in a broad area of basic research and applied physics. The primary role is managing several research projects, developing and operating the experiments in the laboratory, as well as providing simulation support for the experiments. The Research Scientist will work collaboratively with ATAP scientists, engineers, postdoctoral scholars, technicians and students, document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations, and participate in meetings, conferences and reviews.

What You Will Do:

• Support on-going and future R&D projects in the FS/IBT Program and other efforts in ATAP by working collaboratively to develop our main science areas: applications of Associated Particle imaging for agriculture, space missions, and new application areas, quantum information processing, and accelerator and detector development.

• Work effectively in a team with other members of the FSIBT Program to achieve required milestones on existing projects.

• Execute experiments for ongoing projects (associated particle imaging, quantum information processing, detector development, accelerator development).

• Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral/poster presentations at conferences, as well as for internal reports and presentations.

• Develop research proposals in response to funding opportunity announcements.

• Mentor and supervise interns, students, and Postdocs.

• Adhere to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and attend training classes as required and proactively promote and participate in our safety culture.

• Adhere and promote IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability).

What is Required:

• Ph.D. degree in physics or related field, with expertise and a record of publication in relevant areas.

• Experience with broad multidisciplinary expertise in ion beam research.

• Demonstrated proficiency of written and oral presentation of scientific results.

• Normally less than 5 years of relevant experience.

• Ability to work independently.

• Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

• Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Experience with ion beam systems (including vacuum technology, operation of high voltage power supplies, etc.) and diagnostics (radiation detectors, beam current and profile measurements, etc.).

• Experience with neutron generator design and applications.

• Experience with python (numpy, pandas, scipy, etc.) to analyze data and control instrumentation.

• Experience with different types of radiation detectors (photomultipliers, scintillators, diodes, etc.).

• Experience with complex simulations toolkits, such as MCNP, Geant4, and/or Warp3D.

• Experience conducting inelastic neutron scattering experiments, e.g., Experience analyzing gamma ray spectra (energy and efficiency calibration, peak fitting, etc.).

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with all-digital readout electronics (coincidence measurements, etc.) for radiation detector setups.

• Familiarity with Multiphysics computer codes such as COMSOL or ANSYS.

• Experience using High Performance Computing (HPC) running simulations on a cluster.

Salary:

The full salary range of this position is between $7,445 to $17,868 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $9,927 to $13,897 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience plus also aligned with the internal peer group.  It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
