Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for Physicist Staff Scientists (Career-Track) to join the team.  

 

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting original independent experimental physics research, with an emphasis on the structure and reactions of exotic nuclei. An initial focus will be on the development of an exciting research program exploiting recent advances in the field associated with the capabilities at advanced rare-isotope beam facilities including FRIB, RIBF, and TRIUMF.

 

What you will do:

  • Conduct original independent research on the physics of exotic nuclei.

  • Provide technical leadership for conceptualization, design, set-up, and performance of nuclear physics experiments at FRIB and elsewhere.

  • Establish collaborations to exploit unique research opportunities on the science of exotic nuclei.

  • Exploit scientific opportunities at the 88-Inch Cyclotron and other LBNL facilities. 

  • Solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles.

  • Interact with other scientists interested in the science, techniques, and opportunities arising from the work.

  • Publish papers, reports, and act as Principal Investigator on new proposals and projects.

  • Directly supervise other professionals, technical support staff, and or students.

  • Deliver presentations of original work to Division and Lab Management as well as the broader scientific community.

  • Contribute to other Division/Lab activities related to nuclear science and especially the physics of exotic nuclei.

  • Actively support LBNL’s IDEA initiative and goals, and participate in outreach efforts.

 

What is required:

  • Five years of experience in research including two or more years of relevant professional experience beyond the Ph.D. or equivalent in physics or related field at the time of employment.

  • Demonstrated productivity in terms of peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations.

  • Recognized as a resource or active impact contributor in own field as perceived internally by management and peers and externally through conference presentations, publications in refereed journals, invited lectures, and awards.

  • Ability to work independently within a research environment.

  • Capable of leading independent research and development work.

  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear science, especially in the area of low-energy nuclear physics.

  • Skilled at analysis of data from nuclear physics experiments.

  • Ability to interact professionally with staff within the Division, Laboratory and at other laboratories, including Physicists and Engineers.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Salary:

This career-track position is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,101-$18,824 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

 Notes:

  • This position will be hired as a full-time, 5 year career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

  • In exceptional circumstances, a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay, will be considered. Responsibilities at this level include taking on a leadership role. Requirements for an appointment at this level include at least 5 years of relevant professional experience beyond the customary highest degree appropriate to the candidate’s discipline in Physics or related subject. For a career appointment the targeted salary range would be $12,101-$18,824.
