The Nuclear Structure group in the Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) seeks a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Scholar.

This opportunity involves developing and conducting research with both charged-particle and gamma-ray detector systems, with a focus on applications for basic nuclear structure research at facilities such as the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).  A primary project will be development of a straw-tube array for detection of charged particles to be used with a liquid hydrogen target and the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA).  In this position, you will initiate research and contribute to the ongoing programs of the group.

What You Will Do:

  • Use simulations to model and predict detector behavior, contributing to the optimization of detector design.
  • Collaborate with technical and research colleagues to develop prototype detector systems.
  • Design, set up, and execute experiments to characterize and evaluate detector performance.
  • Analyze experimental data using advanced statistical and data analysis techniques, and develop custom data analysis tools and algorithms as necessary.
  • Prepare high-quality manuscripts of experimental results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Actively contribute to ongoing efforts in nuclear structure research within the group.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor PhD or undergraduate students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or a related discipline obtained within the last three years.
  • In-depth knowledge of gamma-ray spectroscopy and particle detection techniques, including relevant instrumentation and data acquisition methodologies.
  • Experience with data analysis and computer programming in C/C++/Python, and ideally familiarity with ROOT and Geant4
  • A demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group
  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient dissemination of scientific results
  • Proficiency in assembling, servicing, or utilizing radiation detection systems.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with detector design and construction and data acquisition development.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374 - $6,445 and is expected to start at $6,133 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
