Postdoctoral Fellow
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will contribute to the detector commissioning, software development, data analysis, and R&D activities for the Muon to Electron Conversion experiment (Mu2e). This work includes assisting with installation and commissioning of the Mu2e detector at Fermilab.
What You Will Do:
- Contribute to the Mu2e detector installation and commissioning at FNAL, especially as regards the data acquisition system and the tracker.
- Contribute to developing, testing, and exercising the software and firmware used to readout, calibrate, and monitor the Mu2e tracker.
- Participate in the analysis of cosmic ray data taken prior to the Mu2e physics run, including the extraction of tracker calibration and alignment parameters.
- Coordinate and organize the LBNL Mu2e group efforts taking place at Fermilab, including fulfillment of collaboration service work (shifts).
- Contribute to the development of software for particle identification in Mu2e involving the combination of tracker and calorimeter information.
- Participate in developing a conversion electron extraction analysis focused on the first Mu2e physics run.
- Conduct original research independently and in collaboration.
- Interact with LBNL and other investigators working on similar or related scientific problems.
- Prepare research papers for publication.
- Present research findings at seminars and conferences.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- May mentor Ph.D. students and undergraduates.
- Other duties as assigned.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. or equivalent in physics with zero-to-two-year experience since Ph.D. thesis
- Experience in particle physics instrumentation and data analysis.
- Ability to attain a high level of achievement as an independent researcher.
- Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
- Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,562 - $6,670 and is expected to start at $6,317 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
