Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar. This Postdoc will work at the Molecular Foundry Nanofabrication Facility and Imaging and Manipulation Facility. This is an opportunity to contribute to a vibrant research community dedicated to doing excellent science in a supportive and inclusive environment.


What You Will Do:

  • Perform work on nanophotonics, particularly on fabrication of plasmonic and nanophotonic devices.

  • Optimize the performance and manufacturability of Near Field Scanning Microscopy/Spectroscopy tip originated by the concept of “Campanile Tip”.

  • Perform simulations, fabrication, characterization, and NSOM measurements.

  • Collaborate with aBeam technology.

  • Collaborate with other research teams and scientists.

  • Publish work in peer-reviewed scientific literature.

  • Present work at national meetings and at regular group meetings.

  • Provide skills to the Principal Investigator (PI) group and trains more junior Scientists.

  • Contribute positively to the active research culture.

  • Work in a safe and healthy manner consistent with EH&S guidelines.

  • Respect diversity.


What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, or another discipline relevant to nanofabrication, nanotechnology and nanoscience.

  • Experience with simulations, fabrication and optical characterization of nano-photonics structures.

  • Safety conscious with a good understanding of positive safety culture.

  • Strong publication record in top-rated scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary groups.

  • Previous experience with nanophotonics with experience on fabrication of plasmonic and nanophotonic devices.

  • Previous experience with optimizing the performance and manufacturability of Near Field Scanning Microscopy/Spectroscopy tip originated by the concept of “Campanile Tip”.

  • Previous experience in performing simulations, fabrication, characterization, and NSOM measurements.

  • Previous experience with aBeam technology.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with NSOM measurement.

  • Prior interaction with a wide and diverse range of scientists from all over the world.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Open-mindedness.

  • The desire to collaborate with multiple research groups across disciplines.

  • Demonstrate leadership in safety culture.       


The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
