Berkeley Lab’s BioSciences Area Office Division has an opening for a Public Affairs Specialist 2. The Biosciences Area within Berkeley Lab has an exciting career opportunity available for an experienced Public Affairs / Outreach professional to support two or more growing scientific programs at their office in Emeryville, CA.

The Public Affairs Specialist will assist with the development and execution of tactical public affairs, outreach, and communications plans for the Agile BioFoundry (ABF) and the Advanced Biofuels & Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU), working with other communications professionals within the Biosciences Area and Berkeley Lab. Duties will include: writing and editing of internal communications, online communications and other related documents, and assisting with media inquiries, creating media opportunities and working with agencies to get favorable stories in the press and online, and maintaining the programs’ social media and web presence. This position reports to the Biological Systems & Engineering Division Operations Deputy and will actively collaborate with the Berkeley Lab Strategic Communications organization.  

What You Will Do:

  • Support ABF & ABPDU Public Affairs initiatives with comprehensive external and internal communications programs and tactical public affairs plans, in coordination with LBNL Strategic Communications, when necessary.

  • Research and write internal communications, online communications to communicate research advances, and other related documents of moderate scope.

  • Research potential stories and seek out resources to promote ABF and ABPDU research initiatives and programs including: internet, intranet, newspapers, periodicals, newsletters and other sources.

  • Capture and quantify metrics for ABF and ABPDU Public Affairs initiatives. Track the programs’ public affairs and outreach activities for reporting to DOE, including outreach to educational institutions, the scientific community and the general public.

  • Schedule and lead high school, community group, and other external entities for visits and tours to the program facilities.

  • Enlist ABF & ABPDU researchers to assist in lab facility tours, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Assist in development of training courses and programs to keep a suitable population of qualified tour guides through normal staffing turnover, as well as general training for communicating program missions and work in any potential outreach or public affairs setting.

  • Maintain ABF’s and ABPDU’s social media presence through regular updates and posts, as well as collaborative efforts with LBNL Strategic Communications and Biosciences Communications for social media events.

  • Collaborate with Emeryville key personnel to manage and update web content for all related ABF and ABPDU websites.

  • Work with LBNL’s Creative Services Offices to draft and maintain collaterals for ABF’s and ABPDU’s outreach and public affairs for distribution to visitors, tour attendees, and at community, scientific, and educational events.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Work collaboratively and provide support to the ESE/JBEI Communications & Outreach specialist to help cover and fill-in in high demand times on all communications and outreach initiatives for Emeryville and other Biosciences programs.

  • Arrange photography and video support at ABF and ABPDU functions, workshops and events.

  • Assist with special projects and assignments as needed

  • Perform other duties within the scope of the classification, as assigned.

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of Public Affairs related experience. An undergraduate degree or an equivalent amount of education and experience preferred.

  • Experience writing, proofing, and editing journalistic style articles, press releases, web content and other related documents.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Google Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver.

  • Demonstrated experience utilizing a variety of media sources to effectively communicate with different audiences including: print media, newsletters, social media, and websites.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a variety of scientific, administrative and technical staff.

  • Some knowledge of scientific theories and concepts related to genomics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioenergy, carbon cycling and biogeochemistry, industrial biotechnology and bio-based chemicals.

  • Some experience with photography and video production desired.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
