Berkeley Lab is the home of world-class team science in service to the nation. Our team of scientific communicators share and promote the Lab’s scientific, institutional, and operational priorities with key audiences internal and external to the Lab. As a Quantum Communications Lead focused on quantum information science and technology, you will perform a wide range of communications duties designed to grow the Lab's reputation as a world leader in quantum research. You will lead the implementation of a communication strategy for quantum research that involves multiple research areas and partner institutions, focusing primarily on Berkeley Lab's two flagship quantum centers: The Quantum Systems Accelerator and the Advanced Quantum Testbed. You will build relationships with the communications offices of partner institutions as well as in the distributed communications teams within the Lab’s research areas and user facilities and closely collaborate with them on quantum-related communications. You will also develop written and multimedia content that informs and engages key stakeholders in the achievements and promise of Berkeley Lab and its partner institutions’ broad and diverse quantum research efforts spanning quantum theory, materials, design, development, and engineering.


What You Will Do:

  • Serve as the communications lead and writer for Berkeley Lab's two flagship DOE-funded quantum centers: The Quantum Systems Accelerator and the Advanced Quantum Testbed. 

  • Working with communications staff and subject matter experts, develop and implement a cohesive communications strategy that engages key stakeholders and multiple audiences in the Lab's quantum research, elevates the Lab’s reputation in quantum research excellence, and helps the Lab achieve its programmatic goals.

  • Collaborate with staff throughout the Computing Sciences Division, Berkeley Lab, and with communications contacts at partner institutions, on quantum-related communications plans and projects.

  • Write releases, features, video scripts, social media content, and other material focused on quantum research advances and coordinate multimedia projects. 

  • Manage the development and maintenance of quantum-related websites, working with web developers, and add content as needed to websites via a CMS system.

  • Provide guidance on messaging, branding, and related efforts.

  • Develop presentations, speeches, and related content. 

  • Assist with media relations responsibilities.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a Science relevant to Berkeley Lab’s research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 8 years of related experience in organizational communications and/or journalism.

  • Experience planning, managing, and leading complex communications projects designed to ensure an institution achieves its programmatic goals.

  • Experience planning and developing compelling content.

  • Experience with web-based communications tools, including content management systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with senior leaders, subject matter experts, and communications staff to develop and gain support for communication strategies, plans, and products.

  • Strong journalism based research, interview, writing, and editing skills.

  • Track record of working well under pressure, during tight deadlines, with humor, tact, and professionalism.

  • Track record of working with confidential information.

  • Excellent time management and project management skills with the ability to prioritize work assignments, work collaboratively with others, and adjust schedules based on changing requirements.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience serving as a resource to members of the news media.

  • Familiarity with project management principles and tools.

  • Active membership in professional and communications societies and forums.

  • Previous experience within a national laboratory or other science-based organization.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

  • This position will be remote initially, but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
