As a Radiation Control Technician (RCT) Team Supervisor, you will play a critical role in maintaining robust safety programs and providing technical field support to ensure the safe and compliant use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources, accelerators, and nuclear materials. You will work closely with our Environment, Waste, and Radiation Protection (EWRP) Department to develop and manage procedures, permits, and technical documentation.
This role provides subject matter expertise on radiation protection, accelerator safety, radiological materials, and radiation-generating devices to the entire Laboratory radiation worker community, which includes supporting World Class scientific facilities such as the Advanced Light Source synchrotron, the 88-Inch Cyclotron, the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator Facility (BELLA), the Molecular Foundry, the National Center for Electron Microscopy, the Glenn T Seaborg Center and many other facilities of note using radioactive materials or radiation generating devices. The RCT Team Supervisor will also have the opportunity to support significant projects such as the Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project, the search for Element 120, the upgrade to the 88-Inch Cyclotron ion source and continued novel accelerator research and development at the BELLA.
The incumbent ensures compliance with regulatory requirements by managing key program documents and applying sound judgment in the implementation of policies and procedures.
The position directly supervises non-exempt Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) within the Radiation Protection Group.
What You Will Do:
Field Support
- Provide guidance and recommendations to research and operations personnel to ensure effective and compliant implementation of radiation protection policies, programs, procedures, permits, work control documents, and regulatory requirements.
- Analyze and interpret radiological safety engineering principles and ALARA concepts to help maintain a safe workplace for personnel performing radiological work.
- Conduct radiological hazard and ALARA reviews; evaluate work plans and develop safety controls to support safe work execution.
- Respond to radiological emergencies, investigate incidents, and prepare formal reports.
- Develop and deliver radiation safety training to Laboratory personnel.
- Plan and observe work activities to verify compliance with radiation protection requirements and ensure safe work practices.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with Laboratory personnel, anticipating needs and providing radiation protection input during planning and implementation of their work.
Technical Program Support
- Develop and maintain technical program documentation, software, and hardware for assigned subject areas, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.
- Evaluate the performance of assigned technical programs and recommend improvements as needed.
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports, responses to information requests, and other required documentation.
Quality Assurance
- Review and analyze radiation protection survey and inspection results to ensure quality, procedural compliance, and adherence to best practices.
- Independently conduct audits and assessments of assigned areas and programs; identify deficiencies and recommend improvements.
Technical Support Team Supervision
- Provide direct supervision to non-exempt Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) and other assigned staff.
- Plan and conduct cross-training; assess staff performance and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Develop or support the creation of Work Planning and Control (WPC) documents, survey plans, radiological authorizations, procedures, and training materials.
- Review and contribute to operations-related procedures, policies, and technical work documents.
- Ensure implementation of all required safety practices, including surveys, dosimetry, postings, labeling, training, and documentation.
