In this exciting role, you will assist in setting up an experiment for cross-section measurement at low energies. This involves creating data analysis routines, testing equipment (such as gamma and neutron detectors), integrating the equipment into the existing setup addressing the challenges of low signal count rates. This effort will contribute to critical milestones of an ARPA-E funded project. The Fusion Sciences & Ion Beam Technology group has an established track record on ion beam induced fusion and their applications.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist in the setting up of detectors to measure neutrons and charged particles resulting from d-d fusion reactions.
  • Assist with the characterization of background levels at the experiment.
  • Assist with data analysis of trace data from the experiment.
  • Participate in group and team meeting discussions.
  • Assist with the maintenance of lab notebook and detailed instrumentation logs.
  • Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure the safety of self and others in the lab and office spaces.

What is Required:

  • Be detail-oriented with good communication, writing and troubleshooting skills.
  • Rudimentary theoretical knowledge and practical experience with laboratory systems, such as gamma and neutron detectors, and record keeping.
  • Rudimentary knowledge of data acquisition and analysis coding using scientific programming languages (Python, etc.)
  • General knowledge of an experimental laboratory.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or similar experience.
  • Experience in integration of hardware to computer control systems.
  • Experience with analysis codes such as Python.
  • Experience in data acquisition and statistical analysis.

Notes:

Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
