Research Assistant
The Energy Geoscience Division (EGD), at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity for a six(6) month Research Assistant position. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our team. With guidance and supervision from the direct supervisor, the candidate will perform routine laboratory techniques related to water confinement at mineral interfaces and chemical characterization, utilizing their knowledge of solid-state NMR, XRD, FTIR, TEM, and SEM.
What You Will Do:
- Perform routine solid-state NMR experiments to investigate water confinement at mineral interfaces.
- Utilize routine XRD, FTIR, TEM, and SEM techniques for comprehensive chemical characterization.
- Communicate results effectively directly to the supervisor.
- Help analyze routine experimental data and present findings directly to the supervisor.
- Help prepare datasets of research directly to the supervisor.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely, following Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
What is Required:
- General knowledge of a science laboratory including experience, particularly in solid-state NMR and chemical characterization techniques.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Previous research experience on carbon capture, enhanced weathering, and hydrogen storage.
- Previous research experience utilizing XRD, FTIR, TEM, and SEM for chemical characterization.
Notes:
- This is a full time, 6 month, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- The full salary range of this position is between $22.40 to $32.58 per hour and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $24.94 to $30.04 per hour depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
