101437 Requisition #

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division has an opening for a Research Associate to join the Mutalik Lab as part of the ENIGMA program.

In this exciting role, you will perform research assignments including isolating bacteriophages on non-model environmental isolates from a unique field site, carry out experimental characterizations of phage-host interactions, prepare samples for next-generation sequencing, adopt phage engineering approaches, and follow protocols to evolve phages with specific functional traits.

The ENIGMA project develops a predictive mechanistic understanding of the dynamic microbial ecology of nitrate cycle process-es and greenhouse gas release under stress. As such, there is a need to understand the nature of the microbial contributions to this process through understanding their genetic functions, their dynamic growth behaviors, and interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. To meet these goals, you will collaborate with relevant ENIGMA metabolomics, proteomics, computational, and field teams to provide work results.

This position has an anticipated start date of May 28, 2024.

What You Will Do:

  • Adopt diverse methods to isolate phages from diverse field site samples, carry out genome-wide screening assays, sample preparations for next generation sequencing, and easy to follow experimental records.
  • Optimize growth of non-model isolates and their genetic manipulations.
  • Carry out experimental protocols to assemble and manipulate members of the microbial community.
  • Adopt and improvise robotic automation protocols and tools for enhanced research productivity.
  • Collaborate with relevant ENIGMA teams on the collection, processing, and analysis of data.
  • Attend weekly/monthly ENIGMA meetings, providing project updates.

What is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Microbiology, Virology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology, Genomics, Molecular Biology, or a related field and a minimum of 1 year relevant experience in Genome/Plasmid preparation, PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience handling bacteria and phage strains including their isolation and characterization.
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies.
  • Experience with multiple sample collection and processing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize and accurately document research results and maintain laboratory records.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate with a diverse staff of scientific and technical specialists within a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with molecular cloning, media formulations, and strain archiving.
  • Familiarity with one programming language (Bash, Perl, Python, etc.).

Notes:

  • For full consideration, please apply with a resume by April 30, 2024.
  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position is expected to pay $24.46 - $31.18 per hour for job code 381.1, which fits within the full salary range of $24.46 - $37.88 per hour. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position will be performed onsite at the West Berkeley Biocenter (Potter St.) — Bldg. 977, 717 Potter Street Berkeley, CA 94710.
  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
  • This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
