Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is hiring a Rigger- Crane Operator to join our Crane & Rigging Department. This role involves assembling rigging equipment to lift and move research or construction machinery while supporting scientific experiments and daily operations.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide crane and rigging support lab-wide, both on-site and off-site.
  • Operate bridge cranes (up to 30 tons), mobile cranes (up to 50 tons), and forklifts (up to 15 tons).
  • Maintain forklift and crane certifications through periodic OSHA-compliant training.
  • Support rigging for various items, including research equipment, temporary structures, and building components.
  • Assist with assembly and disassembly of accelerators, experimental setups, and radiation shielding.
  • Help fabricate and test equipment, including research apparatus and rigging fixtures.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, promote workplace safety, and report injuries as required.
  • Attend safety and technical meetings and complete required training promptly.

 

What is Required:

  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent industrial training, with journey-level crane and rigging skills for industrial or commercial construction.
  • Valid NCCCO TSS TLL crane certification for up to 50 tons.
  • Meet Laboratory Mobile Crane Operation Certification requirements, with a minimum of a Class B California Driver’s License.
  • Extensive rigging and equipment installation knowledge from training, experience, and certification.
  • Experience operating mobile cranes on various terrains.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer management skills.
  • Ability to inspect work sites, analyze needs, and develop effective solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including understanding signals over phone or radio.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, work at heights and in confined spaces, use manual dexterity, wear PPE, and lift 50 lbs. to chest height.
  • Experienced in operating forklifts (up to 15 tons) in confined and uneven areas.
  • Skilled in job site organization and maintaining complex tools and machines.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Millwright experience. 
  • Proficient in moving heavy machinery. 
  • Ability to read schematics. 

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) eligible for overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The hourly wage for this position is predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates. The  for this position is set at $58.37/hour. 
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA, and will include driving company vehicles and equipment to remote LBNL locations.
