Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will perform work within ATAP as a vital member of a team consisting of physicists, engineers, fabrication teams, post-doctoral scholars and students. You will be coordinating technical operations, and contributing to instrument development, testing and operation in the FSIBT Program.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Coordinate and perform FSIBT instrument development tasks, laser and ion beam experiments, materials characterization and technical operations.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on laser and ion beams, including laser beams for materials characterization and qubit fabrication, as well as particle trapping and cooling with lasers.
  • Troubleshoot and document technical problems related to beams, materials fabrication and characterization, and develop and implement solutions.
  • Procure commercial parts and raw materials and make in-house modifications to realize applied physics instrumentation design and performance goals, maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Schedule and coordinate support as needed, including equipment installation, regular and preventive maintenance, handling shipping packaging / unpackaging of components and materials, etc.
  • Maintain and improve data collection, production and test records. Track and control instrumentation component and materials inventory.
  • Perform research and development following best practices, ensuring reproducible and well documented results.
  • Recommend safety protocols for instrument use and provide training for proper and safe use of equipment as needed. Coordinate integrated safety management (ISM), manage chemical storage and inventory and safely dispose of hazardous waste.
  • Create and maintain Work Planning and Control (WPC) documentation for tasks/instrumentation that requires specific engineering or administrative controls.
  • Attend and contribute to design review and progress meetings.
  • Work with lasers, plasmas, particle beams, microscopes, vacuum systems, pressurized gas.
  • Work with cryogens and operate cryocoolers.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Experience in fabrication of research instrumentation or similar products, and in operating and maintaining other complex equipment and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with instruments for characterization of mechanical and optical properties and with operating and monitoring applied physics instruments.
  • Experience in proactively analyzing technical problems and troubleshooting technical equipment.
  • Experience implementing and/or managing R&D projects, which may include planning, scheduling, and coordinating resources to achieve project goals.
  • Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary and diverse scientific research environment, be innovative, and design, guide, and support R&D tasks for FSIBT projects.
  • Excellent analytical skills for problem solving, troubleshooting and data analysis.
  • Experience with safe chemical and hazardous waste handling, storage and disposal.
  • Ability to learn new skills and techniques as required by the situation.
  • Demonstrated safety awareness with a strong understanding of positive safety culture.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and multi-tasking skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Research experience, such as co-authorship in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Machine shop experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
