Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science, and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Senior Custodian will act as a lead worker for a crew of Custodial staff. You will train new Custodians, establish priorities, inspect work, confer with supervisors, and requisition supplies.

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform cleaning and custodial duties in an assigned area including but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing/polishing floors, and specialty floor waxing.
  • Operate buffing, floor scrubbing, and polishing machines.
  • Wash walls, ceilings, floor level windows, window moldings, doors, Venetian blinds.   Vacuum, shampoo, and spot clean carpets and upholstery. Dust, clean and polish furniture, woodwork, chalkboards, ventilators, and equipment. Clean, disinfect and maintain restrooms, showers, and washrooms including replenishing supplies. Empty and clean waste receptacles and dispose of trash.
  • Use protective clothing, safety equipment, and respirators.
  • Comply with LBNL implementation of health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental protection policies.
  • Perform all work safely and be particularly aware of potentially hazardous operations or conditions.
  • Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the appropriate supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager and when appropriate the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department.
  • Report promptly, and correct when appropriate, any hazardous conditions that are discovered.
  • Proceed with work only after having ensured that appropriate safety procedures have been implemented.
  • Plan work with full consideration to safety.
  • Ensure that all unique activities that involve potentially hazardous conditions are carried out in conformance with current Activity Hazard Documents (AHD) to ensure that risks are acceptable.
  • Keep operating and quality-assurance records, such as daily logbook and equipment entries that are adequate to meet facility requirements.
  • Ensure that personal exposure to toxic chemicals, ionizing radiation, and contaminants is maintained within prescribed standards and is as low as reasonably achievable.
  • Minimize the volume and toxicity of all LBNL-generated wastes and maintain chemical inventories as low as reasonably achievable.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Clean ductwork and pipe using mobile elevated work platforms; clean air diffuser.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience leading a team, scheduling and inspecting worksites, and ordering supplies.
  • Must have previous custodial work experience and knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Ability to read and write. Ability to communicate in English well and understand and communicate with supervisor and employees regarding work assignments/safety issues. Ability to read and comply with posted warnings, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work on feet majority of the shift; carry material/equipment up and down stairs; Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, lift 50 lbs. to chest height. Ability to work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment and under florescent lighting. Have manual dexterity in both hands. Ability to distinguish colors used in color codes. Ability to use telephone and/or two-way radio.
  • Must have a valid California Drivers License.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping and communication; ability to write presentable reports and memoranda on computer.

 

Notes: 

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. 
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreement step rates.
