ESnet is looking to hire a Senior Network Security Engineer.

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Division is a scientific network that interconnects the DOE national laboratory system; is widely-regarded as a global innovator in network architectures, tools, and applications; and is currently the fastest scientific network in the world.  You are responsible for protecting ESnet assets, responding to computer security incidents, and advancing information security tools and architectures within the global R&E community in support of scientific inquiry.

This position may be hired at a Level 3 or Level 4.

What You Will Do, the Level 3 Will: 

  • Performing various security duties, such as, managing core security services, supporting incident investigations, evaluating new technologies, developing new tools & detections, and independently carrying out operational on-call duties.
  • Uncover and remediate potential computer and network vulnerabilities, reducing the risk incurred by vulnerabilities and developing key components of the security architecture for ESnet.
  • Integrate knowledge of network protocols, services, threats, vulnerabilities, mitigation strategies, hardware capabilities, and other information to build a security environment that reduces and mitigates risk while allowing ESnet’s open science mission to succeed.
  • Represent the security team and work with other ESnet teams to understand risks and develop more secure solutions.
  • Ability to participate in an ‘on call’ rotation.
  • Work on and resolve complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. 
  • Exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. 
  • Determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel.

In Addition, the Level 4 Will:

  • Performing various security duties, such as, developing new security services & architectures, leading incident investigations, identifying and evaluating emerging technologies, mentoring junior team members.
  • Develop a holistic security architecture for ESnet.
  • Represent the security team nationally and work with other ESnet teams to understand risks and architect more secure solutions.
  • Lead cross-organizational, long term projects supporting important deliverables.
  • Work on and resolve significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles.
  • Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

What is Required, for Level 3:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field with at least 8 years of experience in hands-on technical work in an operational setting; and/or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Broad expertise and/or unique knowledge in an area of cybersecurity.
  • Strong written communication skills and a demonstrated history of as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, able to determine what is needed to fulfill high level outcomes.
  • Patience and persistence in service of improving the status quo towards our long term security vision.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods and techniques given clear evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

In addition to Above, for Level 4:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field with at least 12 years of experience in hands-on technical work in an operational setting; and/or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • A deep understanding of security principles with a demonstrated ability to think from a risk-based perspective, operating in an environment of ambiguity. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated history of working effectively with other teams on common goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with ambiguity, able to determine what is needed to fulfill high level outcomes and direct others.
  • Able to work on multiple high-profile projects and respond to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and development of evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Ability to work on and resolve significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $129,948 to $219,276 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $146,184 to $178,668 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for remote work. Remote workers are defined as individuals that reside in the United States, but 150 miles away from Berkeley Lab. There may be an expectation to intermittently conduct work, attend meetings and training on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.  Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
