You will serve as a Scientific Engineering Associate in Berkeley Lab’s Applied Math and Computational Research Division (AMCR) supporting LPGA control systems, including hardware and software, as part of the Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) project as well as future Quantum Information Science and Technology efforts.

The AQT program is focused on constructing, enhancing, operating, and maintaining an open, fully accessible gate-based quantum computer. Our technology platform is based on superconducting quantum circuit processors, and we aim to generate the detailed experimental findings needed to resolve foundational questions in quantum information science, and to guide near-term hardware and algorithm co-design.

You will:

  • Under consultation, provide multifunctional technical support, applying engineering or scientific concepts and practices to contribute to the design and development of embedded software for real-time control applications.

  • Integrate embedded designs and develop low-level APIs for control system interfaces.

  • As part of a team, develop FPGA-based control systems to support AQT experimental operations.

  • Support gateware development for FPGA-based systems, ensuring proper integration and functionality.

  • Run experiments for superconducting quantum bit calibration and characterization.

  • Provide resolution to a diverse range of complex technical problems related to control systems and embedded software where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data to optimize the performance of control systems.

  • Collaborate with scientific staff and engineers to understand experimental requirements and translate them into control system designs.

  • Maintain and optimize existing FPGA control system infrastructure.

  • Mentor junior engineers or students as required.

  • Write and maintain documentation for FPGA designs, embedded software, and control system functionality.

We are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant program and extensive related professional technical experience.  Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience in troubleshooting complex hardware/software systems.

  • Proven experience in FPGA design and development, with a strong understanding of Verilog, SystemVerlilog and other HDLs.

  • Extensive experience in embedded software development, including C/C++/Rust programming for real-time operating systems (RTOS) or bare-metal environments.

  • Experience using Python-based programming tools for system automation and data analysis.

  • Ability to independently plan and complete projects.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.

  • Ability to mentor and provide direction to technical support staff or students.

  • Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports.

  • Relevant publication record or demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of technical results.

Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time, 3 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
