Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Student Assistant to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will work in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) to assist in studying bacteriophage-host interactions, microbial community manipulations using phages, and developing synthetic biology tools for rapid design-assembly-testing of bacteriophages. You will be an integral member of Mutalik Lab and Roux Lab at LBNL. Under the direct supervision of the principal investigator and in collaboration with the co-PI, you will contribute to the development of phage-host interaction assays and generate Illumina sequencing libraries for de novo sequencing of phage genomes. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Assist with aseptic microbiology practices, media preparation, and growing microorganisms
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with a large team of wet-lab and computational scientists
  • Keep detailed laboratory notebook 
  • Prepare reports and standard operating procedures as requested

 

What is Required:

  • Enrolled in a full-time academic program
  • Relevant coursework at the undergraduate level: Microbiology

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Microbiology lab and Molecular biology lab experience
  • Cloning, phage biology

 

Notes:

  • This is a part-time 10 month student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Work will be primarily performed at West Berkeley Biocenter (Potter St.) — Bldg. 977, 717 Potter St., Berkeley, CA.
