Student Assistant
Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a part-time Student Assistant (8-16 hours/week) to support the Advanced Light Source upgrade project (ALS-U). The position offers hands-on experience under the supervision of the ALS-U engineering group, contributing to the ongoing effort to enhance the ALS, a leading facility in x-ray, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light research. What You Will Do:
The role will vary based on your skills and interests. Those focused on technical documentation, QA, and manufacturing will work on process development and quality assurance. Students interested in CAD and design will focus on 3D modeling, large assemblies, and engineering drawings. Training in LBNL-specific engineering tools will be provided.
Key responsibilities include:
- 3D modeling and design using Creo Parametric CAD
- Converting 3D models to 2D engineering drawings
- Assisting with assembly and as-built documentation
- Developing QA documents (Work Instructions, Test Plans)
- Extracting images from models for procedural illustrations
- Supporting project documentation and engineering work for the ALS-U project.
What is Required:
- Full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing, enrolled in an engineering or related technical program.
- Basic understanding of Quality Assurance and engineering principles.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiar with mechanical CAD modeling.
- Programming experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Technical writing experience.
Notes:
- This is a part-time, 1 year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- The hourly range for this position is $18.67 - $24.39. The final hourly rate is dependent on years of education completed. Applicants should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
