The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Systems Engineer to support the design, development, analysis, and maintenance of systems and infrastructure for scientific research. This mid-level role bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and practical engineering solutions, ensuring the mechanical systems needed for both basic and applied research are in place.

This position supports advanced scientific projects and user facilities at LBNL, including ALS, ALS-U, DUNE, CMB-S4, and EIC. Applicants should have experience in systems engineering for complex, multi-disciplinary projects. The initial assignment may involve the ALS-U or DUNE projects.

As part of a collaborative team, the Systems Engineer will help develop and maintain systems engineering frameworks, manage technical baselines, requirements, budgets, and validation, and coordinate activities with other institutions and divisions. A background in accelerator or experimental systems engineering is preferred.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform systems engineering functions for a cross-functional, geographically dispersed team of engineers and scientists.
  • Analyze moderate-scope problems, considering various factors to determine appropriate actions.
  • Apply judgment within defined procedures to resolve issues.
  • Foster productive internal and external relationships.
  • Ensure the systems engineering approach aligns experiments with science goals, translating them into technical requirements and specifications.
  • Develop performance and interface requirements documents.
  • Support integration through development of manufacturing, assembly, and test flows.
  • Create test procedures in collaboration with subject matter experts to verify performance.
  • Manage requirements and interfaces throughout their lifecycle using management tools.
  • Communicate project technical status, issues, and successes clearly with teams and senior management.
  • Coordinate presentations and technical reviews for committees.
  • Collaborate with EHS and management to ensure safety is integrated into requirements and verification plans.

What is Required:

Systems Engineer Level 2:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience, or an advanced degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven systems engineering experience, ideally in building scientific instruments.
  • Skilled in using systems engineering tools to ensure effective technical implementation and meet performance requirements.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues in lab or experimental settings.
  • Experienced in CAD, requirements management software, and engineering tools.
  • Knowledgeable in managing interface and integration assemblies; BIM experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of model-based system engineering (MBSE) is preferred but not essential.
  • Able to apply company policies to resolve various issues.
  • Collaborative with interdisciplinary teams, including scientists and engineers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for documentation and reporting.

In Addition to the Above, Systems Engineer Level 3:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience, or 3 years with a Master's degree.
  • Proficient in CAD and simulation software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, COMSOL) for design and analysis.

Salary:

Systems Engineer Level 2:

The expected salary for this position is $106,000.00 - $129,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $94,164.00 - $158,856.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Systems Engineer Level 3:

The expected salary for this position is $130,000.00 - $158,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $115,176.00 - $194,340.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
