Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has multiple openings for a Computer Systems Engineer 3 in Berkeley, CA.

 

Duties: Work in a collaborative, results-driven development environment to help guide the strategic growth decisions of the ESnet network and provide novel insight into what the network is doing. Function as a member of the ESnet’s Planning and Architecture Group to consult and collaborate with ESnet users, peer ESnet organizations, and peer Research and Education (R&E) and Regional Optical Networks (RON), along with internal software development, network engineering and operations teams. Develop analytical methods to help drive strategic decisions underlying the current and next-generation ESnet network.  Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team in gathering requirements, designing, implementing, and testing software used to measure and analyze network services. Manage large data sets as they apply to complex mathematical systems and apply knowledge of data fusion and both algorithm and script development. Establish scalable, automated processes for large scale data extraction, model development, model validation and model implementation. Develop processes to guide strategic capacity planning. Explore different analytical models and methods to augment existing tools to better understand the behavior and health of the network. Drive the implementation of an ESnet data sharing policy. Engage with the R&E networking community to prototype and deploy common analytic solutions. May telecommute.

 

Benefits: This full salary range of this position is between $10,575 to $17,845 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Requirements: Employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field, followed by five (5) years of progressive work experience in the job offered or in a computer-related occupation. Position requires:

 

1. Mathematical statistics and data analysis fundamentals including: large scale data mining and modeling;

2. Operations research, stochastic optimization, machine learning,

queuing theory, and probability theory to construct models for solving network optimization problems;

3. Linear Programming and Sensitivity Analysis for shortest path problem in real time application;

4. Mixed Integer Programming for optimization in products using commercial mathematical optimization software including Xpress, Gurobi, or CPLEX;

5. Continuous-Time Markov Chains (CTMC) in building analysis and simulation products;

6. Bayesian optimization for cost parameters tuning in the routing engine to improve routing algorithm performance;

7. Network measurement using SNMP or IPFIX;

8. Internet networking and protocols;

9. Common data structures and algorithms;

10. Designing, developing, and testing software using: C++, Python, Go, Java, or Javascript;

11. Google Cloud Platform, Kafka or Grafana;

12. Presto, Hive, and Phabricator in a production environment; and

13. UX Design and Data Visualization.
