Transportation Supervisor
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Transportation Supervisor to join the team.
In this role, you will manage and coordinate transportation and distribution services and staff, ensuring efficient use of resources, budget, and equipment. You will oversee Transportation vehicle fleet operations, ensuring compliance with EH&S and DOT regulations, and maintain driver qualifications. You'll administer Lab policies, safety requirements, and personnel actions. Additionally, you'll collaborate with stakeholders to provide timely transportation and distribution services and customer support. This position is classified as a Testing-Designated Position under DOT regulations and Berkeley Lab’s Substance Abuse Policy.
What You Will Do:
- Supervise and guide Transportation staff (8-10 drivers plus Lead) to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Hire, train, and evaluate staff, addressing performance concerns promptly.
- Ensure compliance with Lab policies, safety procedures, and timely transportation and distribution services.
- Collaborate with Shipping and Receiving, HR, and the Site Service Department Head for consistent expectations and service delivery.
- Maintain accurate personnel records, equipment inventory, and job status tracking. Respond to customer concerns, manage risks, and provide monthly performance metrics.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and seek improvements in processes, equipment, and materials.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, state, and Lab regulations, including the Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
- Report incidents, injuries, or health issues promptly and follow safety protocols.
What is Required:
- 3 years of leadership experience with demonstrated ability to provide first-line supervision to a diverse group of full-time and contract truck drivers.
- Class A commercial driver's license with hazmat and air brake endorsements and current medical card.
- Experience includes managing, planning, scheduling, coordinating, and directing staff.
- Must possess substantial experience in transportation and distribution operations.
- Must have significant knowledge of principles and practices of vehicle operation and maintenance, including load tie down experience.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures pertaining to transportation.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary for the role and scope of work performed.
- Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping and communication; ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda on computer.
- Experience working as part of a team and within all levels of the organization.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to promote customer relations through partnering with customers and colleagues.
- Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Must have and maintain up-to-date knowledge of pertinent Department of Motor Vehicle and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.
- Must have and keep current knowledge of general safety requirements that pertain to vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Must be able to maintain updated knowledge of and comply with Federal DOT, State, and Lab policies and regulations governing driving vehicles including compliance with the Lab’s Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in supervising/leading union employees.
- Experience in working and leading in a union environment.
- Knowledge of Berkeley Lab policies and procedures.

- This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- The Transportation Supervisor position is expected to pay $120K - $132K annually, which fits into the full salary range of $105,576 - $178,152 for the job classification of G03.1
