Appointment Types

also may be referred to as "Employee Class"

Employee Appointments
Employee: someone in the Lab's HCM system who has job data and person data, paid through Payroll/Benefits or on LOA.

Career - Employed at a fixed percentage of time at 50% or more of full time for an indefinite period. Recruitment required.

Faculty Scientist/Engineer or Faculty Senior Scientist/Engineer - Requires that an individual hold an active University of California (UC) faculty appointment. Recruitment not required.

Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) - Registered graduate student of the University of California (UC), and eligible for a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) appointment on their campuses. UC rules and regulations pertaining to graduate students in the various disciplines normally apply. GSRAs work a fixed-percentage schedule and receive a flat monthly salary in accordance with their campus department policies. They are also eligible to receive fee remissions, including health insurance benefits, and nonresident tuition as determined by UC policies and as implemented for GSRs on the individual campuses. Recruitment not required.

Limited - Employed at any percentage of time, fixed or variable, where the appointment is expected to continue for less than 900 hours in a 12-month period. Recruitment not required.

Student Assistant - Full-time student attending an accredited school, college, or university in a degree program. Recruitment not required.

Postdoctoral Scholar - Further scientific training and professional development for individuals who have recently completed a doctoral degree. May not exceed 5 years total Postdoctoral Scholar. Recruitment not required.

Rehired Retiree - Retired from the Laboratory, or any University of California (UC) location including the UC-managed Department of Energy laboratories. Recruitment not permitted.

Term Appointment- Employed to work on a specified project of clearly limited duration for a minimum of six months, up to three or five years, depending on the position. Recruitment required.

Visiting Researcher - Appointment for person on approved leave from his or her home institution. The home institution does not need to be a university or college, nor does the individual have to be a faculty member of any institution. Appointments are for one year but may be extended for a second year on an exception basis. Recruitment not permitted.

Affiliate Appointments
Affiliate: someone in the Lab's HCM system who has person data, and is not paid through Payroll/Benefits or on LOA. Can obtain a badge and has system access using a Berkeley Lab ID (formerly known as LDAP). In addition to standard Affiliate appointments, there are two subsets of Affiliate appointments known by other labels.

User - an Affiliate who is associated with one of the Lab's user facilities, including BASE 88-inch, ALS, JGI and Molecular Foundry.

Intern - an Affiliate who has gone through a recruitment effort for selection and is being paid a stipend or travel expenses through AP. They are typically paired with a mentor who is identified by the host. Examples include Workforce Development and Education's BLUR and BLUF programs, Berkeley Lab Director's Apprenticeship Program and iCLEM.

Contract Workers
Contract Worker: someone in the Lab's HCM system who has person data, who is tied to a purchase order in the PeopleSoft Financials system, and is not paid through Lab Payroll/Benefits. Paid through an external contract agency and performing work at Berkeley Lab.
