Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Material Handler in the Facilities division. Reporting to the Shipping and Receiving Supervisor, this role independently handles receiving operations, including inspecting, barcoding, documenting, and processing incoming materials. The position works with vendors and internal teams, managing a wide range of goods through internal systems (iBox, Peoplesoft, and Ebuy)  Candidates need experience in a receiving environment, knowledge of DOT regulations, strong communication skills, and must possess computer skills necessary to create, sort, and manage e-mail and to utilize computer software to create electronic templates and folders.

You will:

  • Works in a high volume environment, and ensures a high level of accuracy in receiving a wide variety of materials (including radioactive, hazardous).  
  • Utilizes the Ibox receiving program and enters receipt information into the Peoplesoft procurement database.
  • For sensitive and/or high-value items (> $10K), ensures proper property controls by assigning and affixing property numbers onto received items and entering required data into the property management database.
  • For perishable items, ensure that packages are properly refrigerated and assigned for same-day delivery.
  • For hazardous shipments, ensure that materials are properly manifested and segregated per DOT49CFR regulations.
  • For radioactive materials, ensure that they are communicated to the Radiation Protection Group upon arrival.
  • Stages material for delivery by LBNL Transportation Unit.
  • Offloads and inspects incoming shipments to ensure that material is addressed properly and all counts match the driver's manifest.
  • If freight is damaged or mishandled, accurately annotate the instance.
  • Stages material on conveyors, carts or pallets according to size and/or urgency, with premium shipments given the highest priority.
  • Provides customer service to answer customer inquiries.
  • Assists in resolving vendor and Procurement order receipt problems.
  • Maintains files associated with material processed.

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years experience (Journeyman level experience) in operating a wide range of motorized and non-motorized material handling equipment, including high-capacity forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies.
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license (Real ID)
  • Advanced level of computer knowledge using software in a Receiving Unit environment and data entry experience using PC hardware.
  • Experience with e-mail systems, template creation, and electronic filing.
  • Ability to obtain LBNL forklift certification within the six-month probationary review period.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with very little direction and set priorities for incoming work.
  • Good interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to function in a professional customer-service-oriented manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum unassisted; ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds for 10 to 15 feet.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and has manual dexterity in both hands.
  • Substantial organizational skills with an ability to work accurately with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain LBNL forklift certification within 90 days. 
  • Possess advanced product knowledge of all materials associated with the research industry.

 

Desired skills/knowledge:

  • 4+ years of relevant experience performing a variety of material handling duties utilizing industry-standard receiving software systems in a Receiving Unit environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Department of Transportation hazardous material handling regulations
  • Knowledgeable in MS Word, MS Excel preferred.
  • Familiarity with Oracle, iBox, and or other similar receiving computer software is preferred.
  • Familiarity with barcode technology is preferred.

 

Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid), eligible for overtime pay.
  • Salary range: The expected hourly range for this position is $27.81 - $40.47 depending on the step you are hired at.
