Mechanical Engineering Technologist
Are you a seasoned Mechanical Technician looking to take on complex, hands-on technical challenges in a cutting-edge research environment? We’re seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join our team. In this role, you will provide critical support for accelerator operations and scientific users by leveraging your expertise in mechanical and electromechanical technologies. You’ll work on diverse assignments, collaborate with scientific and engineering staff, and potentially step into an informal team leadership role.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop specifications, plan methods, and apply your expertise to achieve technical outcomes.
- Fabricate, assemble, machine, install, operate, test, and maintain sophisticated scientific equipment, including vacuum systems, cryogenic apparatus, and research mechanisms.
- Use substantial knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical technology, scientific principles, and technical mathematics to independently solve problems and recommend solutions.
- Read and interpret complex blueprints, sketches, and assembly diagrams to guide your work.
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists in the design process, contributing design details and proposing modifications as needed.
- Perform detailed tests and measurements on components and systems to ensure they meet specifications.
- Document processes, procedures, test results, and any modifications for future reference.
- Leverage your potential to step into informal leadership roles within the team.
What You Bring:Level 3 Requirements:
- 4–6 years of experience in mechanical or electromechanical technology, with a proven ability to work independently on complex assignments.
- Expertise in assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining complex systems and scientific equipment.
- Proficiency in interpreting and working from complex blueprints, parts lists, and repair manuals.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment.
- General knowledge of mechanical equipment design procedures.
Level 4 Requirements (in addition to Level 3):
- 6+ years of experience or an AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (or equivalent industrial/military training).
- Advanced expertise in multiple mechanical and electromechanical systems, surpassing Level 3 requirements.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proficiency with computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and CAD/CAM software, for tasks such as data analysis and computer-aided design.

The hourly range for the 706.3 (Level 3) position is $41.77-$60.55. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
The hourly range for the 706.4 (Level 4) position is $48.02-$69.63. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
