The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Metrology Technician for the survey and alignment section of the engineering metrology group. In this role, you will perform routine survey measurements and precise alignments of particle accelerators, photon beamlines, and other scientific equipment. Additionally, you will conduct ground penetrating radar (GPR) scans of floors and walls to support seismic anchoring. You will work under the guidance of a mentor or work lead.

 

What You Will Do:

Metrology Technician Level 1:

  • Coordinating and conducting facility and machine surveys using laser trackers, laser scanners, GPR systems, and optical instruments.
  • Performing survey analysis, design, and fiducialization under general supervision.
  • Aligning accelerator and beamline components within designated tolerances.
  • Documenting survey projects and measurement data electronically for archiving and distribution.
  • Ensuring efficient and accurate data acquisition/analysis to minimize operational downtime and expedite new projects.
  • Collaborating with engineering staff, physicists, scientists, and external users to meet survey and alignment requirements.
  • Evaluating, calibrating, and maintaining survey instruments and software.

 

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Perform basic engineering design using 3D CAD modeling, generate fabrication drawings, and liaise with fabrication teams.
  • Operate and program stationary coordinate measurement machines.
  • Troubleshoot console computer to instrument communication issues for measurement systems.

 

What is Required:

Metrology Technician Level 1:

  • 1-2 years of related Mechanical Technician experience.
  • High school diploma with strong math skills (geometry, trigonometry, basic calculus, statistics).
  • Proficiency in CAD software and 3D visualization of geometric systems.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems and precision alignment mechanisms.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Quick learner of new instrument technologies.
  • Good documentation and data management skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and create operational instructions.
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs up and down stairs, work on the floor, kneel, and crawl to access spaces.

 

In addition to the above, Metrology Technician Level 2:

  • 2-4 years of related Mechanical Technician experience.
  • Advanced CAD software experience and 3D visualization of geometric systems.
  • Experience with laser trackers.
  • Knowledge of precision survey and alignment techniques, analysis, and computations.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in accelerator survey and alignment or a related field.
  • Understanding of console computers to robotic instrument communications.
  • Proficiency with Spatial Analyzer or equivalent data acquisition, instrument control, and analysis software.
  • Familiarity with computer-based survey data acquisition systems and robotic survey instruments.
  • Proficient in Creo Parametric.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The full hourly range for the level 1 position is $27.87 - $40.39. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • The full hourly range for the level 2 position is $33.42 - $48.47. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
