Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Building Technology and Urban Systems Division has up to two openings for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team. In this exciting role, you will develop, implement, and evaluate equipment modeling tools (Modelica-, FMI- and/or python-based) for designing heat pump (HP) and air conditioner (AC) systems, and conduct psychometric chamber tests. You will also perform extensive laboratory tests. You are expected to work under the guidance of scientists and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary research and development teams including researchers within and outside LBNL.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct research, develop and deploy new generation HP/AC modeling tools for design and control/FDD analysis based on the Modelica and FMI standards.

  • Design new low GWP refrigerant HP/AC systems.

  • Investigate cutting edge algorithms and tools in the fields of heat pump/air conditioner design and/or equipment modeling.

  • Conduct psychrometric chamber tests.

  • Co-develop Modelica and Python-based software.

  • Publish research results in journals, present findings at national and international conferences, and work with industry on testing and deploying the research.

  • Contribute to securing funding for the development of new control technologies for buildings.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, chemical process engineering, aerospace engineering or related fields.

  • Experiences on designing AC/HP systems and/or modeling.

  • Experiences on psychrometric chamber testing.

  • Comprehensive understanding and experience with psychrometric chambers.

  • Solid background in vapor compression or expansion cycles, and thermo-fluid systems (with application to building HVAC systems).

  • Basic knowledge of FDD & controls for AC/HP systems.

  • Strong interest in combining modern computing technologies for modeling and simulation of equipment and FDD/control systems, integrating these technologies in large software packages and working with teams that deploy them to the building industry.

  • Strong analytical and communications skills, both oral and written, and able to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of their research.

  • Knowledge of programming languages, Python in particular.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in the Modelica and FMI standards.

  • Experience of using version control (e.g., git).

  • Capable of working on multiple tasks and projects.
